This is perhaps the best articulation of why it is nearly impossible to be a faithful Catholic and vote in a national election for a Democrat.

Thanks for posting that. I'm happy to see a Priest stand behind the pulpit and unapologetically preach the teachings of the church. The priest at our church, while speaking about the need to protect the sanctity of life, stopped short of making any endorsement. He only stressed the importance of prayer and scripture to guide your conscious and vote accordingly.

In response to the original question posed, (I'll admit I don't have time to read all 7 pages right now) I would only say that Catholics historically would vote for Democrats as that was the party seeming to speak more for the poor, the down trodden, and the sick. Matthew 25:34-40 speaks of an important tenant of being a good Christian. Thus, the stereotype that the Democrat party does more for the less fortunate could lead some people's conscious toward supporting the left. My response to that line of thinking is that the gospel verse is about what you did for the poor. You gain no "inheritance to the Kingdom" for what your government does and/or for voting in those politicians.

I think at one time you could be Pro-life and be a Democrat. However, that is simply not the case today. I can't think of a single Democrat in office that is outspoken about being Pro-life but there are Republicans that support a Pro-choice view point (3 current US senators). When the Democratic Party made it a litmus test to be Pro-choice to gain nomination for office, they essentially locked out Catholics that truly practice the faith.

Something that I found interesting was that Fr Meeks spoke about the pitfalls of socialism. He noted a long line of Pontiffs that have denounced it from the 1800s all the way to Pope Benedict. And now we have Pope Francis talking about the pitfalls of market capitalism. We are truly at the abyss.
