To look at what you say you believe to be the character of god, if you truly believe His is a god of love, and how contradictory that is.
It's not the judges fault that inmates are damned to life sentences in prison.
God is love, Holy, Just, and righteous. If God was only love as in your definition and not just, holy, or righteous, then no evil would be judged or be punished. If no evil is punished then this is not an act of love towards the victims of that evil. Until you realize that you are stuck with an incorrect view of God.
How does punishing the perpetrator show love to the victim? Punishing the perpetrator of injustice doesn't rectify or heal the damage. It doesn't fix anything.
Christ didn't come to judge, He came to save. He is the Judge, and His judgment is just, but His judgment is to save everyone -- He is also the Advocate. He didn't come to punish, He came to heal, to restore.
The justice of God is restorative, not punitive.
