Autobiography from 1831 provides rare, firsthand account of a Muslim slave in America

Saw this on twitter and thought it was fascinating, so wanted to share.

Interesting account of his treatment and how it differed from the first owner to the Owen family. Visiting the Elmina slave castle in Ghana last year, it was horrifying to see the conditions in which slaves were kept, even in that transient place: meanwhile, just above the screams, the Dutch Reformed military congregation held its Sunday services regularly.

Fascinating. It boggles the mind that humans who professed to love Christ and claimed to follow him could treat other humans innthat way. At least the Owen family tried, it seems, to live their faith in a relatively more sincere manner.

Just a few threads over there are some people that are using religion to justify some pretty horrible treatment of Arabs in Israel/Palestine.

Interesting that he seems to have come to some kind of fused Christian-Islamic personal faith near the end of his life. Reading the Gospel and writing dedications to Muhammad in the margins. Absolutely fascinating article
