Happy Tuesday everyone.

Edit: 2 thoughts.

1. If you can't trust your secret gay escort, who can you trust?
2. Holy crap that dude sounds vindictive. I feel like there may be more to this story.

But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

Martin supporting Catholic gay weddings, I thought I'd never see the day.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing- supporting gay marriage.

Sinful Catholics- priests, not so funny. But not surprising for the past 2000 years there has been flawed people in the church. It is a good thing to bring sin, wrong doing into the light.

Ok with pointing out hypocrisy, but sleeping around outside of marriage is still sin.

Their sins aren't my business. If they are doing something illegal or acting in a hypocritical way while in a position of power, then I'm all for bringing it into light. . . . we're on the same side here - I don't mean to sound argumentative.

I'm pretty sure you know what I mean. You can be a gay priest as long as you don't have a relationship with another man. Just like you can be a straight priest with the same restriction except with women(I know the marriage loophole for priests who converted but you know what I'm getting at).

I know what you mean. I just find the qualifier funny.

Calling myself "inactively straight" until late in college would have been weird. A better way to describe it was "awkward nerd who didn't shower enough".

Y'all are both right. He's right under the current structure. Marriage isn't an option for Priests, so given that, if they can't exercise self-control, they shouldn't be Priests. You're right w/ what the Scriptures say. The issue is the policy that prohibits marriage among Priests, which creates a situation where it's either self-control or don't be a Priest.

I haven't looked into the story much, but did it say why he outed them?

I figure that extortion would be so much more lucrative.

His stated reason is in the article.

The actual reason...who knows.

This reminds me of Sodom and Gomorrah all over again. (Genesis 19)

Not to mention all the evil the Lord saw on earth and came to the conclusion to send the great flood. (Genesis 6)

I don't understand. Is the voice of the Lord so hard for people to hear through scripture? Have people lost touch with obedience so bad that they are not self-aware enough to realize they have made an idol out of their own sinful, evil, selfish, desires of their flesh?

Humans were meant for more than chasing their vain desires.

"Surrender, pick up your cross, and follow me."

Disclaimer: I have sinned myself and at one time was a prisoner of my own fleshly, evil desires.

Oh, it's not this that reminds me of Sodom and Gomorrah, although this is evil. There was already plenty of "arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy." that we see in American society long before this. And heck, our society idolizes violence (Gen 6:11). We even want parades for it.

Rending your garments over America again? How many outfits is that this month?

Church leadership indulging in sexual depravity doesn't remind you of S&G but guns and poverty do? Do we read the same scriptures?

He mentioned Sodom and Gomorrah. I referenced the verse in Ezekiel that stated what their sin was. He mentioned Genesis, so I referenced what the verse he referenced said.

I don't recall church leadership being involved in Sodom and Gomorrah. What these priests did was evil, no doubt. But it's not what reminds me of Sodom and Gomorrah. There's much more in society that actually pertains to Sodom and Gomorrah and the verses in Genesis that stick out to me.

This has been one of the toughest weeks of my life, so I really don't have the energy to argue. The first sentence in your response to me made it clear that there isn't really a chance at mutually respectful dialogue, so I'll just move on and let you have last word.

Sounds good then. I was going to talk about Lot himself but I'm not sure how you interpret S&G, given what you've said about God killing people (or rather, not killing / destroying in the OT). What would Ezekiel say about the judgement of the almighty?

Why aren't priests allowed to marry either a male or female? What's the big deal?

If marriage is so bad, why isn't everyone encouraged or required not to get married?

Marrying another male should be obvious, as for marrying a woman there are married Catholic priest. In the Latin Rite of the Church they are rare (married Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist ministers who come into full union with the Catholic Church can become priest if the so choose). In the various Eastern Rites,, married men can become priest however an unmarried priest is not allowed to marry. This mirrors the practice of Orthodox Christians.

The disciples said to him, 'If that is how things are between husband and wife, it is advisable not to marry.'
But he replied, 'It is not everyone who can accept what I have said, but only those to whom it is granted.
There are eunuchs born so from their mother's womb, there are eunuchs made so by human agency and there are eunuchs who have made themselves so for the sake of the kingdom of Heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.
__Matthew 19:10-12

The Latin Rite of the Catholic Church currently chooses to draw its priest from those willing to be celibate "for the sake of the Kingdom." This is the current practice of the Church, not dogma.

Quote:

If marriage is so bad, why isn't everyone encouraged or required not to get married?
Marriage is not considered bad in the least, it is a Sacrament of the Church.

Just now saw the other thread about your buddy and just wanted to say I'm very sorry to hear about this tragedy. Praying for you, his family, and his other buddies right now. I have seen the dark side of PTSD and depression first hand up close and personal (it doesn't always come from war...a woman witnessing her bf committing suicide out of the blue will do the trick) and the level of torment inflicted upon the victim can be almost unbearable at times...not only that...the tentacles are long and reach numerous others. Not trying to derail, but just hoping everyone close to the situation is able to find some degree of peace and comfort in the wake of this.

Boo,
Thank you for the kind words. His memorial service is this Friday, which I'm sure will be difficult for all but hopefully it will also allow his wife, kids and those closest to him to start taking some steps forward.
