How long do you want to ignore this user?
This has been stuck in my head all week. Love it.

And can it be that I should gain
An int'rest in the Savior's blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

Refrain:
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

'Tis myst'ry all: th' Immortal dies:
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine.
'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.

He left His Father's throne above
So free, so infinite His grace
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam's helpless race:
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature's night;
Thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th' eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

(Refrain)
Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim
till all the world adore his sacred name.

1. Come, Christians, follow where the Master trod,
our King victorious, Christ the Son of God.

2. Led on their way by this triumphant sign,
the hosts of God in conquering ranks combine.

3. Each newborn servant of the Crucified
bears on the brow the seal of him who died.

4. O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree,
your death has brought us life eternally.

5. So shall our song of triumph ever be:
praise to the Crucified for victory!

Don't know how to do links but I like Alison Krause "Let's go down to the river and Pray". My sister had it played at her funeral.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
In honor of Reverend Graham and also my late father who loved this hymn:

1 Just as I am, without one plea,
but that thy blood was shed for me,
and that thou bidd'st me come to thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

2 Just as I am, and waiting not
to rid my soul of one dark blot,
to thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

3 Just as I am, though tossed about
with many a conflict, many a doubt,
fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

4 Just as I am, thou wilt receive,
wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
because thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

I know that one from O' Brother Where Art Thou. She also did "I'll Fly Away".

My favorite:

Your favorite is my wife's favorite. Have you ever read the story behind the guy who wrote "It is Well with my Soul"?
Pretty incredible.

The Angel Cried (Paschal Megalynarion):

The Angel cried to the Lady Full of Grace:
Rejoice, O Pure Virgin!
Again I say: Rejoice!
Your Son is risen from His three days in the tomb.
With Himself He has raised all the dead.
Rejoice, all ye people!
Shine, shine, O New Jerusalem,
The glory of the Lord has shone on you.
Exult now and be glad, O Zion,
Be radiant, O Pure Theotokos,
In the Resurrection of your Son!

SING, my tongue, the Savior's glory,
of His flesh the mystery sing;
of the Blood, all price exceeding,
shed by our immortal King,
destined, for the world's redemption,
from a noble womb to spring.

Of a pure and spotless Virgin
born for us on earth below,
He, as Man, with man conversing,
stayed, the seeds of truth to sow;
then He closed in solemn order
wondrously His life of woe.

On the night of that Last Supper,
seated with His chosen band,
He the Pascal victim eating,
first fulfills the Law's command;
then as Food to His Apostles
gives Himself with His own hand.

Word-made-Flesh, the bread of nature
by His word to Flesh He turns;
wine into His Blood He changes;-
what though sense no change discerns?
Only be the heart in earnest,
faith her lesson quickly learns.

Down in adoration falling,
Lo! the sacred Host we hail;
Lo! o'er ancient forms departing,
newer rites of grace prevail;
faith for all defects supplying,
where the feeble sense fail.

To the everlasting Father,
and the Son who reigns on high,
with the Holy Ghost proceeding
forth from Each eternally,
be salvation, honor, blessing,
might and endless majesty.
Amen. Alleluia.

I love Charles Wesley hymns. My favorite is another by Wesley, "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing". He wrote it on the one year anniversary of his "second birth".

The actual hymn/poem written by Charles Wesley has 18 original verses, but my favorite is the 4th verse of the version in the UMC hymnal

He breaks the power of canceled sin,
he sets the prisoner free;
his blood can make the foulest clean;
his blood availed for me.

Breaking the power of "canceled sin" is the attempt of Wesleyan theology to hold together sometimes opposing views on grace. He believes sin is cancelled by the cross but that even cancelled sin still has power evident by Wesley's own struggles. Christ breaks cancelled sins' power too through sanctification. He hasn't given up on us on this side of the cross.

Amen! Knowing the stories behind the likes of hymnodists such as Fannie Crosby, William Cowper, etc. gives additional depth and appreciation to songs like Blessed Assurance and There is a Fountain, Filled with Blood.

Not to be whatever, but hallelujah by Jeff Buckley isn't a hymn or Christian song

Swimmer, you must know Sacred Head, Now Wounded. Stricken is a great Lutheran hymn - wish we sang it in our SBC church.

I'll add "I Sing the Mighty Power of God." Isaac Watts

I heard a speaker once argue that the Easter hymns are better than the Advent hymns because the Easter hymns contain more sorrowful flat notes, which is a artist's medium more suited to the human condition. Kind of makes sense.

In the confines of a photograph
Lives a child who once was me
Oooh, do you see?
I still see through those eyes
Why did you choose to believe bare-faced lies
And let the troubles of others darken your skies?

I wrote my own hymn
I sing my own hymn
It says, oooh
"Your soul is good!"
I wrote my own hymn
I sing my own hymn
It says
"Yes, your soul is good!"

In the remnants of our time
I wake to find you've broken me
Used to be free
But in pain I chose to stay
Why did you choose to believe things unkind?
Oh, hallelujah!
Heaven is in your mind

I wrote my own hymn
I sing my own hymn
It says, oooh
"Your soul is good!"
I wrote my own hymn
I sing my own hymn
It says
"Yes, your soul is good!"

I wrote my own hymn
I sing my own hymn
It says, oooh
"Your soul is good!"
I wrote my own hymn
I sing my own hymn
It says
"Yes, your soul is good!"
