He has no one to blame but himself if he was lost. We are responsible for our actions. He did untold damage to the moral compass in this country.

I do not hope he is in hell. I spent much time praying for him and his family. I will continue to pray for his survivors.

Of course you do. Else, all of this is nonsensical:

Are those in this country whose moral compass was damaged by Hugh not responsible for their own actions also. Which is it? Is our moral compass a product of our environment or solely our own selves?

I feel great sorrow for him and how he was deceived by the sensual pleasures of this world. I feel even more sorrow given that he led millions astray and that they were seduced by lying spirits. I hope God finds mercy and that in his last hours he found reconciliation and forgiveness from God.

Hugh Hefner Did Not Live the Good Life

Overnight, we learned of the death of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. Hefner is the iconic figure who not only made pornography socially respectable (and even more lucrative), but also spent a life constructing a "playboy philosophy" of sexual freedom that would supposedly undo the "Puritan sexual repression he saw in American life."
The death of any person is a tragedy. Hugh Hefner is no exception to that. We can't, though, with his obituaries, call his life "success" or "a dream."
Hefner did not create, but marketed ingeniously the idea that a man's life consists in the abundance of his possessions and of his orgasms. To women, he marketed frenetically the idea that a woman's value consists in her sexual availability and attractiveness to men.
The "bunny" logo was well-chosen because, in the end, Mr. Hefner saw both men and women as essentially rabbits. This path was portrayed vividly by John Updike in his Rabbit Angstrom series. It is not a happy life.
And yet we are not actually rabbits. We can see our deaths coming, and we outlive those deaths to give an account of our lives. If you want to see "success," look instead to the man faithful to the wife of his youth, caring for her through dementia.
In the short-run Hefner's philosophy has won, on both the Right and the Left. The Playboy Mansion is every house now. Many church leaders implicitly or explicitly say, "This is fine." In many cases, those who hold to what the church has always taught on sexual morality and the value of women are the dissidents now, regardless of how "conservative" a movement proclaims itself to be. Thou hast conquered, O grotto.
The long-run, though, is quite different. Jesus will reign.
In the meantime, the Good Shepherd searches the thickets for his lost sheep. And sometimes for a lost rabbit, too. The sign of the good life is not hedonism but crucifixion. The sign of the good life is not a bunny but a cross.

If your fire alarm woke you up at 2am and said . . .

"Hey! There is a fire in your house! This fire cannot be seen or smelled or sensed in anyway and I have no proof or evidence that there is a fire, but I know its there. In fact, I don't have the proper mechanisms to definitively determine that there is a fire to begin with. But, trust me! There is a fire! Also, ignore the tornado siren you hear, that guy knows even less than I do - so go outside."

Maybe that's my problem.

Here's yours: "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you'

Man if you're praying for hef, you've got a lot of time on your hands. How much time do you spend praying for Woody Harrelson? What about baseball player Randy Johnson? I'm just wondering what criteria you use when picking and choosing those for whom you wish to pray on a given day.

I've been praying for Christie Hefner and her father since 2001. Mostly because of the tragic influence they have had on society. Christie was president of Playboy at the time and that's why I prayed for her. I got her corporate address and sent her a Bible tract. Obviously I haven't heard back but I will never stop praying for her. Looks like her half brother may be the figurehead of the company now so I will start praying for him. I won't pray for Hugh anymore. He was supposedly raised in a Christian home so there is always the chance that a seed was planted and he repented, I hope so. He left behind a trail of death and destruction though.

By this logic the whole animal kingdom (including us) is toast. There has to be a special place in hell for leg humping dogs then. Those evil spirits aren't just assigned to us are they? Is it still evil to fornicate frequently? With multiple partners? I get confused with all of the changes over the centuries. The constantly evolving church is hard to keep up with. If it's deemed a sin now, you can bet that it will be at least somewhat excepted later. Usually to appease those who are tithing.

The preacher in the pulpit get's a pass here. He characteristically presents from a position where making sense doesn't matter and is fully accepted.

On the death of Hugh Hefner
Mark Shea - Catholic and Enjoying It

Quote:

I hate the speculations about whether Hefner is in hell. Such speculations are, I believe, always wicked. More than that, they are telling. When a famous person dies and American Christians feel a compulsion to wonder if they are damned, such speculations always seem to be directed toward the destinies of fleshly sinners, but never to sinners notable for sins against the poor, or sins popular with consumers of Right Wing Noise Machine agitprop. Rock stars, pop tarts, models, and actors with checkered sexual pasts get this treatment, but never ice cold corporate magnates.

Jesus' most terrifying words are typically directed (as in the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats) against those who oppress the poor, not those who could not keep it in their pants. Fornication and "evil thoughts" are, to be sure, also condemned by him, but (like Dante and the rest of the Catholic tradition) sins of the flesh, while evil, are not treated by Jesus as nearly as evil as sins of the spirit. Lust is bad, but pride and envy and greed are much worse. He seems to have gotten on rather well with prostitutes. He is much harder on Pharisees.

Yet these days, you don't get people speculating on whether some cheapskate is in hell, because obscene sexuality, not obscene wealth, are far more serious in a culture of American Puritans, whether Catholic and Protestant.

That said, I hate just as much the encomiums to Hefner's "impact on our society's changing mores" as though this fleshmongering auctioneer of human exploitation was some kind of visionary liberator whom a Great Nation Mourns. He was, let us be plain, a man who made a fortune selling women as commodities like an auctioneer in 1860 Charleston to men he labored to turn into addicts so that he might pick their pockets. That is the Glorious Revolution he wrought. Let us pray for him as a sinner for whom Christ died most certainly. Let us refrain from speculating about his eternal destiny. But don't kid me that this rich trader in human misery is some kind great American.

Thanks for sharing that. I agree. I'm not a fan of the "he's probably burning in hell" mindset either. The author of that made me think of Franklin Graham's recent praise of Trump's UN speech where he threatened to kill 25 million people (or to "totally destroy" the country). We are very odd in how we pick and choose which sins to condemn. Hefner's impact on society shouldn't be celebrated, but neither should his death (not saying that's what happening here). He should be mourned because he bore the image of our Creator and was of immeasurable worth to God.
