Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!

This is the day the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad (Ps 118:24).

I'm curious, why do people say Christ is risen instead of Christ has risen?

Most of our hymns are in the present tense, because these events are in the same mysticalogical now as we are.

So, Christ did not rise. He is Risen. This event continues for us, for all mankind.

Thread title fail, but in my defense it was late.

I don't know what this means.

Also, isn't risen the past participle of rise? Using "be" in the present tense and "rise" in the past tense seems grammatically wrong no matter what you're trying to convey. Or am I in the wrong about this?

Yeah I hesitated on that word but it's the best word for it. It's a mystery. They happen continuously across time. We talk about things in the eschatological now (ie the end times which have already happened, for example, the way we understand the "today" when Christ told the thief "Today you will be with me in paradise").

As for the grammar. He is risen... He is in the state of having been resurrected. He did rise, but it lacks the continuity of His existence in that state.

So risen is being used as a noun, then? Seems like a quirky use of the word. The origin of that phrase would be interesting to read about. I won't pursue it any further here I suppose...tradition is tradition.

Yeah, I never thought about it like that, but it is a title, like Firstborn from the Dead. Or the Risen One.
