This year, St. Patrick's Day falls on a Lenten Friday. After consideration of the traditions often related to this festive holiday, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo is granting a dispensation of abstinence from meat on March 17 for local and visiting faithful in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Cardinal DiNardo is asking Catholics who are required to abstain from meat on Friday to do an extra act of charity or penance in exchange for eating meat.

A very sensible decision.

Where's the (Licit) Beef? Amid St Pat's (Fri)Day, The Indult Desk Is Open

Quote:

Eleven years ago, among the first splashes made here was a national take on what came to be termed the The Corned Beef Indult that is, the dispensation granted by a diocesan bishop so the Irish faithful can enjoy the patronal sandwich with a clear conscience when St Patrick's Day falls on a Lenten Friday, thus pitting the feast against the obligatory abstinence from meat.

This year marks the first collision of the two observances since, and in most cases the announcements are just beginning to bubble up, numbering over 40 so far. As history goes, in 2006 the general permission was given by nearly half of the nation's 179 Latin-church jurisdictions.

Just received this from my parish:

Quote:

Bishop Vsquez has received several requests for dispensation from the obligation to abstain from meat on St. Patrick's Day (March 17) which falls on a Friday this year. Taking into consideration the Irish Catholic population in the Diocese of Austin, Bishop Vsquez grants a dispensation for this Feast Day for all Catholics in the Diocese. If dispensation is taken, Bishop Vsquez asks that the individual do an act of charity or penance on another day.

In Christ,
Most Rev. Daniel E. Garcia
Vicar General, Auxiliary Bishop
