From today's Catholic daily reading- who are the (2) witnesses in Revelation 11? Did a quick search and received many various explanations (not surprising for book of Revelation with all the symbolism) : No one knows, Peter & Paul (Church), Moses & Elijah, Enoch and Elijah- they never died. What say you?

Daily Readings

Revelation 11 4-12
I, John, heard a voice from heaven speak to me:

Here are my two witnesses:
These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands
that stand before the Lord of the earth.
If anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouths
and devours their enemies.
In this way, anyone wanting to harm them is sure to be slain.
They have the power to close up the sky
so that no rain can fall during the time of their prophesying.
They also have power to turn water into blood
and to afflict the earth with any plague as often as they wish. - comments sounds like Elijah and Moses

When they have finished their testimony,
the beast that comes up from the abyss
will wage war against them and conquer them and kill them.
Their corpses will lie in the main street of the great city,
which has the symbolic names "Sodom" and "Egypt,"
where indeed their Lord was crucified.
Those from every people, tribe, tongue, and nation
will gaze on their corpses for three and a half days,
and they will not allow their corpses to be buried.
The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them
and be glad and exchange gifts
because these two prophets tormented the inhabitants of the earth. Comments- this applys to many of the saints in NT and OT.
But after the three and a half days,- comment interesting that it is half day is added
a breath of life from God entered them.
When they stood on their feet, great fear fell on those who saw them.
Then they heard a loud voice from heaven say to them, "Come up here."
So they went up to heaven in a cloud as their enemies looked on.- comments- Just like ascension, assumption of Mary (Tradition), Elijah chariot

As far as actual people, the only two I can think of is Jesus and Moses.

As long as we're just guessing, I'll guess the same two mentioned in Joshua 2:1.

From "Days of Vengeance" by David Chilton:
Quote:

5-6 St. John now speaks of the two Witnesses in terms of the two great witnesses of the Old Testament, Moses and Elijah - the Law and the Prophets. If anyone desires to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. In Numbers 16:35, fire came down from heaven at Moses' word and consumed the false worshipers who had rebelled against him; and, similarly, fire fell from heaven and consumed Elijah's
enemies when he spoke the word (2 Ki. 1:9-12). This becomes a standard symbol for the power of the prophetic Word, as if fire actually proceeds from the mouths of God's Witnesses. As the Lord said to Jeremiah, "Behold, I am making My words in your
mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall consume them"
(Jer. 5:14).

Seconded, for the same reason.

Would anyone like to join me in a small wager? Bet some treasures stored up in heaven?

I guess that whoever they are, many people who think they "know" will be looking in the wrong place and miss them.
