I'll qualify this with the fact that I'm only 37 and went down a rabbit hole tonight.

Chester Bennington had a range and vocal ability that has never been seen. One of his best friends had the same in Chris Cornell. And thinking back to 2017, it kills me we lost both to their own hands within a couple months.

I've literally been on a 3 hour wormhole on performances/reactions/etc to "Crawling" including that near final performance before his death (added below)



Again, he's not stereotypical in his abilities, but that's so haunting knowing what happened less than a month later.

Chris Cornell, for me. I'm not a big screaming fan, and Chester's more mellow vocals aren't my favorite. I'm just not really a fan of his timbre, though I can respect his ability.

For Cornell, I love his voice in any setting. Acoustic set or if he's belting, just an amazing voice.

Granted, I don't think either vocalist is necessarily underrated. Anyone who knows who they are fully appreciates their talent.

Carl Wilson often got overshadowed by his big brother, but I think his voice is incredibly underrated in the Beach Boys sound.

I don't think Cornell is underrated but outside of the metal world people don't know who RJD is. He never had any "hits" like Cornell did.

He sang lead for the band that had the highest selling debut album in history, and after that record was surpassed, they were still the highest selling debut album by a band in history.

He is the reason there aren't Boston tribute bands with the same frequency as tribute bands of other types. The vocals are too hard to replicate.

Don't know that he is underrated.

I don't think Bon Scott was ever given the credit he deserved for 1970's ACDC. Much broader range than Johnson (Highway to Hell is great example). Don't know how to say it really, he just made ACDC edgier. Almost evil sounding, but you know, fun evil.

Big Balls is another great example. He basically talks the song. It's just goofy sexual innuendo but it's a classic. Dude was just strange but intriguing.

Cornell and Layne Staley get my vote for most missed, but not sure about underrated even though they were never "superstars". Either way they were both killer.

Meaningless thought exercise but I've wondered how ACDC would have faired in the 80's had Bon not OD'd in 79. Johnson should be credited with taking them much more mainstream, hard rock party music basically. By contrast, ACDC under Bon was just so 70's, darker, weirder, and more likely to make parents freak out.

As for the topic, I'm not sure people appreciate how beautiful Waylon Jennings' singing voice was. They hear his name and think "Outlaw County" but the man could sing.

His vocals are definitely a big reason why Boston's sound was so unique. That debut album is iconic, and you're right, it's not easy to replicate his range and power. Maybe 'underrated' isn't the right word, but I feel like he doesn't always get the same recognition as other legendary rock vocalists, despite being a huge part of one of the best-selling albums in history. His talent was on another level.
