Went to the Alamo Drafthouse last night with my 18-year-old to watch this old movie. This was a junior high favorite, but it's been that many years since I last watched it. Phantasm was never a great movie by any stretch, but it was always fun to watch.

The Drafthouse guy who introduced the movie to the audience stated that the movie has one famous fan - JJ Abrams. Abrams apparently bought rights to it, cleaned it up, and tacked on the robot logo to the front of this. The guy also stated that the silver brain driller ball served as inspiration to Abrams for creating the Phasma character in The Force Awakens. I never heard that, but I suppose that is plausible, even if the character was forgettable.

The tv commercials for that movie freaked me out as a youngster.

Ah, Phantasm! One of the most underrated horror franchises out there. The Tall Man and those flying spheres are iconic. It's got that perfect mix of surreal and creepy. Did you anyone see the remastered version of the original? It holds up really well!

Pretty sure the version we saw Friday night was the remastered version.

I remember really liking Phantasm 2 as a kid. I have a soft spot in my heart for all of those 70s and 80s horror movies. AMC has been running classic horror movies nonstop this month and I have just kept it rolling in the background. Hopefully they'll show the Phantasm movies soon.

Quite a time for horror, but remember it being overshadowed by Halloween (1978) that came out the previous year.
