Why Can't Hollywood Leave a Perfectly Good Movie Alone?

I just saw a trailer for the HBO Max remake of the 90s "Father of the Bride." First, that was already a remake of the great Spencer Tracey and Elizabeth Taylor hit. Second, it was one of the rare remakes that was even better than the original (to me, at least). Steve Martin was so great in it.

As usual, they have to put the twists on the previous one for the modern times. The parents live in Miami and their marriage is falling apart. The Banks are played by Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan ( of "Conga" fame). The odds of it being a good movie again don't look too high.

Is there no movie safe from the remake/reboot bug?

Yeah that's a big **** no. Nothing is sacred except the almighty dollar and The Current Thing. Welcome to 'merica!

Sucks, because all previous versions of the movie are erased from existence whenever a remake is made. That, and no one is allowed to enjoy the older versions anymore, while everyone is actively forced by law to watch the new one.

Raw deal all around.

I saw that and thought the same thing.

I think that also means I'm old as *****

Haha, okay, sarcasm noted!

But, the reboots can kind of ruin the joy of the original. For me, I really loved "Sex in the City." The series and the movies all ended on a high note with the main characters in a good place. I was very disappointed with how its reboot of "And Just Like That" basically blew up that happily ever after feeling, not to mention that they thought it could be a good show without Samantha. I wish now they didn't even go there.

Well, in theory the money going toward this could go to a better movie
But we all know it would just go to another boring remake anyways.

If people want to stop seeing ****ty remakes, stop going to them. Go see movies that are original concepts. Production companies are in it to make a profit. They dont really care about making 'art'

The majority of the money will always go to whatever the current executives at any given studio think is the safest bet, in order to preserve their jobs. Hollywood is all about self-preservation. And remakes are a spineless, "safe" bet because they're "name brands" that often come with built-in audiences/lesser blame if they fail.

I mean, Father of the Bride itself was a remake

Quote:

Father of the Bride is a 1991 American romantic comedy film starring Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams (in her film debut), George Newbern, Martin Short, B. D. Wong, and Kieran Culkin. It is a remake of the 1950 film of the same name. Martin portrays George Banks, a businessman and owner of an athletic shoe company (called Side Kicks), who, when he finds out his daughter is getting married, panics.

You'd be surprised how many are (or at least based off the same original work). Hell, both Wizard of Oz and Ben Hur had silent versions before the more famous ones were released.

Isn't it interesting that so many movies are remakes and that most generations don't know because there are so many films made each year.
Another example, I had no idea A Star is Born was a remake.

The Birdcage was a remake of La Cage aux Falles which was itself originally a play, then a movie, then a musical before The Birdcage

I was going to argue "but yeah they waited 40 years after the original to make it"! Then I realized it's been over 30 years since Steve Martin's version. And now I feel old.

However, it feels like it could have come out last year and not feel dated. Doubt you would say that about the 50s version in 1991. Remakes should not be made for originals that still seem modern/relevant. Or maybe I just view the world like its still the 90s, I dunno.

The real mistake is not casting someone on the level of Steve Martin. Andy Garcia I don't see having the comedic chops for the role, even though I like him ok as an actor.

Four times actually. And that's not counting remakes in spirit like "Up Close and Personal".

It looks like a fun movie and a good role for Andy Garcia (I will always see some of Terry Benedict from Oceans). Sure, it's a 'wedding' movie, but it has a unique twist.

But call it something different. Don't just copy the name 'Father of The Bride'.

My kids wanted to watch some newer movie on Disney+ called Cheaper by the Dozen which is an ultra woke remake of a remake, I think.

It has to be the worst remake ever made.

Good luck trying to come close to the feel good charm on Steve Martin's version. My wife and I will watch that ever once in a while when we need a feel good movie. Its fantastic and probably my favorite Steve Martin movie.

One of my favorite scenes will always be removing the "superfluous buns."

We need to organize a committee that targets all the crappy versions of movies for Hollywood to remake. Movies that should have been good, but weren't. Let's at least put the remake philosophy to work.

That's the thing, it's a different movie. The tension between the mom and dad makes it pretty different from the original on its own. Just because it's a 'dad gives away daughter' wedding movie doesn't make it like Father of the Bride. So give the movie its own identity. But 'Father of the Bride' gets more attention. Oh well.

It was a French movie. Never seen it. Same for the Birdcage.

I did recently see the original Spanish movie Vanilla Sky was based on, and while the story is great, just wasn't the same without Crowe's soundtrack and cinematography.
