Afghan Whigs are kings of this category. In Spades - amazing comeback!

And ..... sad to say

The Clash. One of the greatest albums of all time, with an amazing cover art ..... other excellent early work

And then it goes to hell.

Cheap Trick

Untouchable AND legendary run of power pop early records.

In fact, possibly the greatest first set of albums in rock history (yes, look it up).

One on One and Next Position Please .... good. Ok.

Then wow what a fall. The Doctor - unlistenable. Literally.

And then..... 97 and Rockford. AMAZING
HOW DID THEY DO THIS

And then ....... pretty good.

FNM is a good one. I love them but Mike Patton seems to thrive on getting weirder and weirder and less musical.

I'd say Incubus would be one for me.

S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is a killer album.
Make Yourself is a killer album.
Morning View had some great songs but they started throwing in some sloppy/noisy/lazy crap.
A Crow Left of the Murder I hated and just remember noise and they got too political.
Light Grenades was closer to Morning View - some good stuff and lot of crap.

I stopped buying at that point.
Take the trash out staff.

Incubus is a great one.

Fungus Amongus - never really got into it at all
S.C.I.E.N.C.E. - A lot of great stuff, but still probably only my 3rd or 4th favorite album
Make Yourself - Perfect
Morning View - Not too far from perfect
A Crow Left of the Murder - a huge disappointment imo, but there's still some stuff i like on there
Light Grenades - I've come to like this album a lot more recently when i did when it was first released
If Not Now, When? - Just, no...
8 - a couple of ok songs, but mostly meh

It's a weird one for me. There's 4 or 5 songs on it that I really like, and the rest of them I don't care for at all.

It definitely felt like a departure from Make Yourself and Morning View. It was hot and cold for me as well, with some songs being enjoyable and others being just bad

Geez, I haven't seen that Neil Young video since it came out. That one was a real head-scratcher at the time, wasn't until recently that album was a final F-you to Geffen.

Not necessarily adhering to the OP as the studio albums aren't as relevant to this band but for me the easy answer is Phish from a live perspective.

1.0 - Peak

2.0 - Falling apart and disbanded

3.0 - Back to finding their groove>peaking again

The Monkees, but instead of by album, I'll go by singer:

Mike Nesmith almost all of his work is strong. You definitely get the country rock vibe that you also get from Gram Parsons / FBB

Micky Dolenz main singer, probably 50/50 or so songs

Davy or Peter there's a couple of decent songs, but mostly forgettable

No Metallica yet?

raw debut,
More polished follow up,
masterpiece third record,
crazy prog experimentation/limit pushing on fourth,
way scaled back but commercial skyrocket fifth,
sixth and seventh go way low key and divide fans
Cover album and symphony album thrown in for good measure
8th is widely defined as horrible,
movie shows how vulnerable and close they are to ending it
9th shows comeback to 4th,
Let's work with an obscure 70s/80s guy and make a movie
10th is solid career spanning sound.
Let's do symphony again 20 years later.
