Artists with songs that were initially featured on movie soundtrack albums.
Feel free to add anyone else, but the leading candidates are:
Queen
1. One Vision (Iron Eagle)
2. Flash Gordon (Queen did the whole album)
3. A Kind of Magic (Highlander - several songs in movie, but no official soundtrack album)

Or

Kenny Loggins
1. Footloose, I'm Free
2. Danger Zone, Playing with the Boys (Top Gun)
3. I'm Alright (Caddyshack)
4. Meet Me Halfway (Over the Top)
5. Nobody's Fool (Caddyshack 2)

I lean toward Loggins based on volume, but whole Flash Gordon album for Queen makes it close

Kenny Loggins gets a pre-'80s bonus for co-writing "I Believe in Love" with Alan and Marilyn Bergman for the 1976 version of "A Star is Born," sung by Barbra Streisand.

I imagine most of the songs on Purple Rain were heard for the first time in the movie.

Loggins had three other songs on the "Caddyshack" soundtrack ... "Mr. Night," "Lead the Way," and "Make the Move." Only "Mr. Night" appeared on one of his solo albums, 1979's "Keep the Fire," although he added some of "Make the Move" to "I'm Alright" on his live album.

When did the movie soundtrack song become irrelevant? The last one I remember was Batman Forever with Kiss from a Rose and Hold Me, Thrill Me... I had so many soundtrack cassettes as a kid

Great question. Perhaps digital downloading somehow was a factor??? I can't imagine how it would be a factor, but the timing would be just about right.

Looks like they left off "Elegia" from New Order on the Pretty in Pink soundtrack.

They're still a thing. Just off the top of my head, you've the songs below since 2010, and that's excluding the Disney singles like Let it Go and How Far I'll Go.

See You Again - Furious 7
Love Me Like You Do - Fifty Shades of Grey (blech)
Skyfall - Skyfall
Happy - Despicable Me 2
Can't Stop the Feeling - Trolls

Travis Scott had a big song release with 'Tenet'

I think the main reason is just the current trend that most movie music is instrumental and doesn't have lyrics.

The album came out first. When we went to see it, everyone was singing along. It was like a concert on screen! That was a great movie!

Those are scores, not soundtracks.

Maybe Tangerine Dream kinda blurs the line between score and soundtrack, but I think this thread was meant more for songs that you would hear on the radio.

it can be, yes

but the general use is:

score - primarily the instrumental score

soundtrack - typically a collection of licensed songs, but can also be the musical score with additional licensed or movie specific vocal tracks.
