Anyone watch this yet? Released this past Friday I think.

Rosamund Pike doing her best version of Rosamund Pike from Gone Girl. Peter Dinklage as well.

Solid original crime thriller. 8/10

Without spoiling it - I really enjoyed everything about it until the end - but the final ending kinda made up for it.

Agree, solid 8/10

Been meaning to check it out. I really enjoy Rosamumd Pike.

Checked it out. Worth the watch for sure. The ending was predictable I thought but the ride throughout was fun. Just when you think the story is going one way it takes it in another direction.
My favorite character was the lawyer. He was awesome!

She's great. And my comment isn't meant to be snarky. With the opening monologue over a montage you immediately realize why they knew she'd be great for the part.

I'll save more detailed thoughts and opinions (or spoiler tags) for a bit further into the future because I know some will still click on the tag if I post it.

I think when selecting her roles, Rosamund Pike is mistaking - "massively unlikable c-word" for "strong woman"

That said I hated the ending, until the very end

Good watch
Wasbrealky nice to have a complete story in 2 hours and not be dragges out for 20 hours

Agree on ending until very end. I would not have chosen the main story resolution the filmmakers did.

Agreed...fun movie, but the full conclusion of it without spoiling it was all pretty dumb.

Did you see I said SPOILERS AHEAD?

Saw it last night. Entertaining Netflix Fare.

Damn her girlfriend, Francis was beautiful.

Started out strong but got a little hokey in the last 20 minutes.

She's drugged, pumped full alcohol, is driven into a lake, turns upside down in a sinking car but holds her breath for two minutes, fights off a seat belt, kicks out the real window and swims out? Then single handily over powers a bodyguard and drugs / Kidnaps Tyrion? Can't the bad guys just shoot the protagonist in the head and be done with it?

The ending was almost a reward because we hated her so much and were starting to believe she would get away with it.

7/10.

Stealing your spoiler warning.

Watched last night and enjoyed it. For a while we thought they were suddenly trying to turn them into the protagonists - as if we were suddenly supposed to feel sorry for her and Francis. My wife and I keep repeating "I just want to see them physically tortured and begging for their lives to end quickly". DIdn't happen but the the final ending someone made up for it.

The first 30 minutes gave me anxiety - I was furious thinking of someone like that coming after my parents. I remember my dad saying they had a lot of trouble with hoaksters sending crap to my grandfather. Every few weeks you'd find some new piece of junk Veteran's "memorial" trinket that lord only knows how much he paid to receive under the guise of "charity".

***Spoilers!***

Story had a lot of promise when it was looking like it was con artist lawyer vs mobbed up geriatric.

Went off the rails quickly when the Russian mob started to emulate the "Slippery Bandits" and Pikes character turned into James Bond.

Would have enjoyed seeing what the story could have looked like with competent writing.

Agree with the 7/10 above. Solid Netflix movie but had some flaws. Felt like they were dumbing down the process too much at the beginning. Like they made it too obvious that they were showing the audience how their operation works.

Watch Dirty Money, Season 2, Episode 5 "Guardians, Inc."

I honestly thought the screenwriters based this story off one the guardians in that episode, but added a twist, i.e. what happens if an elderly victim is related to organized crime?

I enjoyed the movie, but admit to a little disappointment. I thought I was going to be watching a nice revenge movie, but didn't quite get it. I thought the final ending was realistic, though.

Only other issue is in the real world scenario, I think someone would go after the judge, too.

Agree with this one. Thought it was decent up until the point where she became super human and started defeating the mobsters. Then when Tyrion was going to join her, I really couldn't find anyone in the story to root for.

The ending helped a little bit, but a little bit too heavy on unlikeable characters for me.

As a side note, my GF who is pretty strong on women equality was starting to get real pissed when I kept rooting for that "C-word to die".

A cynical part of me thought they were desperately trying to avoid the 'kill all your gays' trope throughout the movie, that because they were openly identified as lesbians, they were protected.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The Layer Cake ending was needed after they botched the main ending.

I'd have written it without the crazy car in the lake, escape, turn the tables move on him and instead just ramped up the tension in more basic ways quicker between the 2, with her on the ropes...

Then write in some subtle hints along the way that lead to a reveal that either the taxi driving henchman or the main suburban driver were already informants for an investigation into the russian mafia and then her fraudulent activity gets her roped in. She then cooperates begrudgingly to avoid jail time for her own crimes, helps them take down Dinklage, plans to leave town w/ the super hot girlfriend w/ a few diamonds that don't get recovered....then a closing monologue that mirrors the opening one but she talks about how she's out, etc...followed by the Layer Cake finisher.

i'm not sure if this was a "backstory" that Pike came up with, or it was relayed to her by the writer/director, but it's ****ing terrible and made me like the movie less.

Quote:

Marla Grayson and her vape pen are never far apart. According to Rosamund Pike, this reflects Grayson's roots in a vaping company, a part of her backstory that didn't make it into the film.

"The backstory of Marla is that she had a vape business until she was Walmart-ed out of business by a great big discount vape store opening across the street, which she was furious about," Pike told Collider. "I think that was her shot at the American dream played fair. She had a small-time business, she was a small-time business owner, she got screwed and then she thought, 'Right. Chips are down. I'm going all out. I'm gonna play the system like everybody else.' And I think every time she inhales, it's bringing that attitude to it. It's the attitude of having been screwed and now you're out to screw everybody."
oh hey...my small business failed because a better run one came along....I now have moral license to commit elder abuse.

SPOILER

I would have liked to have seen D's mom extract some revenge.

She gets out of the home, RP and Francis are tied up, then D's mom extracts whom all has partnered with her (Dr's, admins, etc)., then determines whether the info is worth her life.

Bring each of these contributors in front of RP, explain why they are where they are, then kill them in front of RP, one by one. All the while saying "this isn't enough - you owe us more" to RP.

She was tough so maybe torture Francis along the way.

Then if you choose to do so, flip to the layer cake ending w/D making his proposal. Still have the end-ending as well.

I enjoyed it but it did not seem like a comedy to me at all.

right...the bumbling russian cab driver, the tooth in the milk, the lawyer's character, etc.

It was seemingly an attempt to replicate Tarantino style torture porn (main character was channeling Uma from Kill BIll at certain points), but it was poorly executed and inconsistent.

Peaked at the in-office lawyer convo and went downhill from there.

And former mob boss that disguised his death in a fire and lives life mostly out of the view of the public eye... ok.

But a 4'4 russian? Not sure I can suspend my disbelief that he wouldn't be kinda easy to spot within a handful of years.

Fun premise, but dropped the ball after the first 45 min.

And how does Chris Messina not get more movie work?

I literally LOLd at Dinklage hiding his face from the bank camera. Yeah, THAT is gonna be how they would spot you.
