Just watched a special on Alan Jackson. I sometimes forget how much a like his music. He had his first big hit in 1991 (my high school senior year) and I think it's crazy they almost didn't release the song. It was an album extra and deemed too country. Glad Alan stuck to his guns. The man can write some country music.

He won his first grammy for that song.
Personally, I really like the song and it still hits me deep when I hear it.

I always found it funny that there were people making fun of him for not knowing which country was which on a map when he was actually referring to the type of governments they had and not their borders. Most of the people making fun of him for them probably didn't have a clue, either.

The lyrics were actually deeper than the people calling him a yokel for the lines..

I think Alan Jackson's biggest issue is that he never seemed overly comfortable in the spotlight. He just wanted to sing his songs and make his money. I know that it was a different time and you actually had to be on the TV when he was giving an interview but he just seemed very distant. Or maybe I'm projecting as I get older.

Based on the special I just watched his only concern was folks would have this image of him trying to make money on a song about the attack. He seemed genuine in his words and they resonated with many Americans at the time. Just a singer of simple songs.

What channel or streaming service was the special?

My first concert was 1994 George Straight Music Fest at Texas Stadium. I didn't like country at the time, but it's about all I've listened to ever since.

Lineup was crazy...I was a Sr in High School and had no idea. I'd love to go back and watch it now

- Kenny Chesney was early in the day I remember liking his sound. As soon as he played "Forever" they dropped beach balls from above and I was officially a fan.
- Faith Hill....wowzer!
- Tim McGraw (he and Faith kissed on stage and crowd went crazy...I had no idea why)
- Alan JACKSON....I thought he was the best
- George Straight....learned to call him King

Understood. How Great Thou Art was played for my grandfather and my mother. I have a hard time making it through any version without getting emotional.
