Lonesome Dove is phenomenal, it really baffles my mind that it didn't win the Emmy for best miniseries that year

Band of Brothers and Lonesome Dove are 1a and 1b.

Hoss***** It's second.

I've seen both and you're both outta your Kellen Mond. Marc Singer was amazing, and who doesn't like cleverly disguised lizards? No one thinking rightly. But, Orry Mayne and his fake limping self? North and South will not hold a rendered pig's candle to Lonesome Dove, despite it's glorious theme music which STILL comes in second to Lonesome Dove!

I love this book... amazed it's never been given a new mini-series or the movie treatment.

Charlie's Angels can still get new movies 30 years after it's been relevant... why can't a bad-ass story like Shogun get some love?

Lonesome Dove is the most overrated hot garbage on this forum.

It is six hours of drawn out rambling about crap with some snakes in a river.

It is terrible and isn't even top 5.

The miniseries is a little dated, but, the book is amazing. Streets of Laredo was pretty good, too. I still need to read the two prequels.

This thread is funny because the mini series format exists to turn romance novels into 4 part prime time soap operas.

The miniseries is tops for me as a western. So much more authenticity in it than your average bs spaghetti western. Sorry, John Wayne. Nobody rides around cleanly shave in clean clothes just knocking people out because "muh chivalry."

All that being said the book is so much better, if for no other reason than full character development. Two big things that were big in the book and not mentioned in the movie.

Call's angst at Gus dying and how he didn't want to stop the drive afterwards. Mentions that he would've driven them straight across Canada. They tried as best they could in the movie to show this but it was just impossible to do it justice.

The "Texas Bull" and how it's the lead of the herd despite no one being able to get anywhere near it. Then the epic battle between it and the Montana Grizzly. So much symbolism that neither animal could kill the other and at the end of it, all the men (that could never get near it) basically held the bull down and sewed it back together to keep it from dying.

Damn, I'm getting goosebumps now just thinking about it.

Wow you just opened my eyes. I've never realized the symbolism in that part until you just mentioned it. It makes sense now. Awesome!

When Lonesome Dove came out, how big of stars were Duvall and TLJ?

Could Lonesome Dove be remade with some B level talent, say Zach Quinto and Chris Pine?

Duvall was fairly big in the 70s, but by 89, he was probably all but forgotten in mainstream Hollywood. Tommy Lee Jones wasn't even a B level actor when Lonesome Dove came out. He's one of the few actors who's career took off later in life. They both benefited greatly from Lonesome Dove.

Duvall at this point was a major movie star, full stop. TLJ had made coal miners daughter in 1980 and had a decade+ of tv movie type work prior to this tv movie. This was a major role for him but the fugitive a couple of years later was what made him an a lister movie star.

Duvsll literally won the Academy Award for Best Actor just 5 years before Lonesome Dove came out, it's not like he had been completely out of the spotlight since his roles on the 70s

You're right, I overlooked Tender Mercies. I was four when that came out, and I've never seen it.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought of V. I liked the first series too; Mr. Willhelm as the head of the invasion. Robert Englund as a goofy, lovable traitor to his race.

You also have to consider the cultural impact of V, as it inspired countless legions of UFO conspiracists and Coast to Coast callers to describe their secret knowledge of the Reptilian alien stealth invasion.
