Have you ever been inspired by a movie in a way that changed your life?

I know guys who joined the Navy because of Top Gun. I know a professional musician who started playing guitar because of La Bamba. (I know, I know, but true story. Right place and time and whatnot.).

I had a conversation about this recently and realized how powerful a movie can be.

You missed out. Great movie. Still one of my favorite comic book movies.

For me it's EuroTrip, which came out my Junior year of high school. I saw the movie with my best friend. After the movie, we vowed to go on a similar trip the summer after our Senior year. So we saved for about 1.5 years and went on a 5 week European trip that summer before I started at A&M. And I never looked back with traveling.

If I hadn't gone on that trip, I don't think I would have made the leap to live abroad for 4 years, where I met my wife. As silly as it seems, I owe it to that movie.

My wife and I plan to retire to the Caribbean or Mexico maybe 5 years down the road and have talked about a food truck after watching Chef multiple times.

Does porn count? - lots of nights filled with "reenacting" scenes from a plethora of "films"

Jurassic Park - I earned my nickname/user name from this movie. I played sports like a raptor, made love like a raptor, and ate like a raptor. The name stuck after that.

The Sandlot - played a lot more baseball with my friends.

Swingers - made a spur of the moment road trip to Winstar immediately after rewatching this movie for the umpteenth time.

The guys I'm talking about were hard workers and athletes from a small Texas town in the late 80s. They didn't have much money, they weren't grade-mongers, and they didn't want to spend another 2-4 years in a junior college classroom. Their options were labor or one of the Armed Forces. And they were 18... they didn't over-analyze it. If Matt Dillon or Patrick Swayze had put out a great Army move with jets, motorcycles, girls, and beach volleyball, I'm sure enrollment would have spiked for the Army also.

They were hurting so bad for recruits at the time that they didn't care why they were there.

Why exactly do you think the military cooperates with movies like that?

People have joined the military for far worse reasons than this.

Wild Things inspired me to get a really big TV at my house so I could watch the pool scene as it was meant to be (frame by frame with frequent pausing) and without people interrupting me with their ridiculous comments like:

"That's disgusting."
"Put that away."
"Sir, I'm the manager, we've had several compl- oh my god, please leave."

The scene in Rocky Balboa where he speaks to his son was worth the price of admission to the whole film. Tears welded up in my eyes while watching that scene for the first time.

Cinderella Man is #2. Showed me what a real man does for his family.

Ha! We watched this last night. Good movie.

I can't recall a movie inspiring me to directly do something, but Star Wars pretty much shaped my life after seeing it.

I went with my Dad to see that about a week after my ex-wife and I split up. I was lower than whale **** going in to the theater, but after that scene I wanted to run out and start kicking ass...

Haha I don't disagree. I support anyone that wants to join the service, I just know that they had to have caught some grief if they told their instructors that's what made them join.

I fully admit this is super cheesy but I make myself watch It's a Wonderful Life every year during the holidays. It reminds me to be aware of the ways in which we can impact people both positively and negatively every day as we go through life. We take a lot of things and people for granted but in a small way we're connected to so many people to whom we are totally blind.
