I'm way behind on watching all of these (life is busy these days) and I'm just now watching ep 5.

The Roger Miller story was awesome! And I really liked the Cash and Elvis stuff.

All of this has been amazing so far.

Just finished ep 3. Man. I've always thought the legend of Hank Williams was over-hyped because of his early death and all the Hank Jr songs about him. I was wrong. He was the real deal.

I saw Billy Joe shaver go into a story one time about sneaking into a Hank Williams show when he was a kid, and the impact it had on him. Amazing to see so many other country music legends tell similar stories. I guess the way they toured in those days they could make a personal impression on a lot of people.

My personal discovery of Hank Williams was when I was sad, angry, bitter, frustrated, in a deep funk about something. I knew about him and his music, but I spent a long night going though the lyrics of almost all his songs, especially to obscure and really sad ones. I realized that I might be depressed, but I would never be as tormented as Hank Williams. God Bless that man. He really was a tortured soul to write those songs.

Take a look at a piece of a lyric from a song written by Peanut Montgomery that George Jones recorded...

"The dirt was clay and was the color of the blood in me
A twelve acre farm on a ridge in southern Tennessee
We left that sweat all over that land behind a mule we watched grow old
Row after row
Trying to grow corn and cotton on ground so poor that grass won't grow"

I recall the first time I heard Jones sing that lyric. Leaning back in my chair, I shook my head and said "Wow".

Quote:

"I can hardly bear the sight of lipstick on the cigarettes there in the ashtray
Lying cold the way you left them, but at least your lips caressed them while you packed
Or the lip-print on a half-filled cup of coffee that you poured and didn't drink
But at least you thought you wanted it, that's so much more than I can say for me"

Damn, you picked another memorable lyric. I heard Jerry Chesnut say in an interview that when he had finished that song he went into his backyard and threw up. Talk about a songwriter having an emotional connection to a song!

For those who don't recognize that second lyric right off the bat -- that's 'A Good Year for the Roses', which of all the songs Jones recorded, is my personal favorite.

"After three full years of marriage, it's the first time that you haven't
Made the bed
I guess the reason we're not talkin', there's so little left to say we
Haven't said
While a million thoughts go racin' through my mind, I find I haven't said a word
From the bedroom the familiar sound of a baby's cryin' goes unheard"....

I agree...George's best song...imho...

Just finished it and loved it. But I also thought it kept trying to turn into a Johnny cash documentary. He's good and all bet never had him in my top 5 greatest country artists.
