I've followed the Van Halen saga since 1983. They've had some ups and downs and some really messed up relationships.

But I'm a huge fan of the music and always will be. Great video. Van Halen Rocks.

A freind of mine who's about 15 years older than I am claims to have seen them in 1978 as an opening act for Black Sabbath. He says that Ice Cream Man was the first song they played in their set and that when David Lee Roth started singing the second verse with Eddie Van Halen screaming behind him on his guitar he knew they were going to be huge. I never knew if he was making that up or not but if it's true it would have been cool to see.

Did he ever say what venue it was at? You could crosscheck the dates of the two tours

I can't remember where he said it was, but I'm sure would have been here in Texas. Haven't talked to him in a year or so but next time I see him I'll ask him.

That video has been around a while. It's crazy that there's not more out there, hell there's more Zep videos than VH. I have the boot of them at the Us Festival, it's really good. Other than these, I'm not aware of much more...and I remember them always being filmed, guys on stage with cameras, when I saw them in '80 and '84. Where's the damn film? Probably hidden away like everything else...at lease Page has the decency to unlock the vaults (for the most part, Earl's Court needs an official release). EVH...he didn't even recognize the bands' 40th anniversary (of the 1st album).

I do remember Van Halen opening for Black Sabbath and they came to Houston and played Sam Houston Coliseum. (78) I didn't go but some folks at school did. I remember my pals concert tee shirt on that one.

I saw Van Halen at the Houston Summit Sept 23, 1982, just a few weeks before this video. Sat on the floor and it was pretty wild if i recall. After the Fire opened up for them and were booed off the stage. I remember someone threw a trash ball and hit the lead singer square in the chest. They walked off to a chorus of boos. I do remember the the build up for Van Halen coming on stage was awesome. They started pumping Led Zeppelin whole lotta love through the sound system. Crowd went crazy. I don't remember the midget but I do recall DLR downing a bottle of JD on stage and picking up joints thrown on stage and smoking them.

I remember at some point looking around on the floor and seeing a good 30 people passed out around me. I couldn't hear for a few days afterwards. I had the concert tee-shirt but lost it over time. It had a Lion on it. (see below). Funny that Diver Down was out by then, but they weren't really promoting it with merchandise.

From the After the Fire Official Site:
Quote:

In 1982 the band appeared on Swap Shop and toured with ELO (Pete King filled for Bev Bevan after he was taken ill), Queen and Van Halen on a fifty-one date tour of America in ninety-nine days. Half way through the tour CBS heard the demo tracks the band had recorded for a new album and requested they return to start in the recording studio.

HOW VAN HALEN CONQUERED THE WORLD IN JUST 10 SHOWS

Quote:

March 25, 1978: The Big Apple Bites Back

According to Van Halen Rising, the group's first NYC show proved to be a rare setback on an otherwise triumphant tour, with "some vocal fans heckling and booing Journey's support act." Happily, five months later Van Halen had a much stronger showing opening for Black Sabbath at Madison Square Garden, with Ozzy even conceding that they, not his group, "ought to be headlining the tour."
Quote:

May 18, 1978: Ozzy Smells Trouble

Van Halen Rising's chapter on the band's 1978 tour begins with a highly entertaining and illustrative story about the night a weary, soon-to-split up Black Sabbath first witnessed the hungry young group that would be kicking their ass all over the world for much of the next year. As Ozzy Osbourne later recounted, "We were just too stunned to speak. We sat there, going, 'that was incredible.' Then, "there was a knock at the door and the best-looking man in the world (David Lee Roth) walked in and said hello." At that moment, Sabbath knew they were in deep trouble.

That's a great link. Confirms that they were filming the '80 show. So where's the damn video, Eddie!?!?
