Still one of the saddest and touching movies of all time. Had not seen it in years and just watched it again tonight.

Thank you vets for what you had to endure.

I remember seeing it with a friend that was a Viet Nam Vet. We walked out of the picture show and didn't speak a word for at least 10-15 minutes.

My dad's a Vietnam vet and thinks that movie is hot garbage.

His Vietnam war movie of choice is Hamburger Hill.

Yep. Many vets do. Here is why.

Oliver Stone's Platoon, while certainly a very well made, well acted, well written film, basically compiles every negative stereotype and situation from the Vietnam War and sells itself as the normal experience of the average infantryman during the conflict. Which is just not historically accurate. There is no question many of these things happened but for all of them to happen to a single infantry platoon is pretty preposterous. I mean, look at what one single platoon faced in that movie:

incompetent, cowardly officer
rampant drug and alcohol abuse
raping of civilians
murdering of civilians including what was meant to be a simulation of the Mi Lia massacre
fratricide (both unintentional and straight up murder)
illegal incursion in to Cambodia
self inflicted wounds to get out of combat duty, etc

Did all of things happen? Of course. Likeliness that a single platoon would have experienced all this, very little. And I say that as a fan of a lot of Stone's work.

If I remember correctly, Oliver Stone basically took the worst things he saw during his time there and compiled them into one movie and one platoon.

When I was a bartender in CS I had a guy who'd come in every now and then wearing a camo hunting jacket. Guy was probably a child during the Vietnam war but would be short on cash and start telling his Vietnam war stories. Secret missions into Cambodia that he wasn't supposed to talk about, etc. I kept thinking, "yeah, I've seen Platoon too."

Source of many incredible and funny quotes:

"Ain't nothin' like a good piece of p****, except maybe the Indy 500"

"What you saving up to be, Jewish?"

"You in big trouble, boy" - use this with my kids regularly

"Feelin' good's good enough"

"It's a lovely f'ing war"

"Gonna put a serious case of crotch-rot on that ugly face of yours, Junior"

"Take a break. You don't have to be an a-hole every day"

Platoon is a veritable gold mine that way.

And Junior, the next time I catch you spraying skeeter repellant on your feet, I'll court marshal your /bleep ass

There are some damn good nam movies out there. Personal favorite is Full Metal Jacket, but mostly for the first hour. We Were Soldiers is my 2.

Apologies for the thread derail.

I love Platoon. It may not be historically accurate, but that doesn't mean it can't be a good movie. It's well written and well acted with great battle scenes.

About 8 years ago there was a platoon in Afghanistan who:

-Had a kill squad and was randomly murdering Afghans
- had drug and alcohol problems deployed
- collected body parts as souvenirs from locals and enemy they kills
- beat the **** out of the one would be whistleblower
- either cowed their PL an other leadership into submission or he simply looked the other way (no way he didn't know)

That's all I can recall from memory, I'll see if I can dig up he article. While not as bad as Platoon, that's a lot of problems coming from 30-40 guys.

Just finished Tiger Force about a unit in Vietnam that did almost all of those things short of crossing into Cambodia which they probably would have if they'd have been anywhere near the border.

We don't seem to have many Vietnam movie threads so I wouldn't consider it a derail.

My list, in order:

We Were Soldiers Once
Hamburger Hill (very under rated IMO)
FMJ
Apocalypse Now
Platoon
Born of the 4th of July
First Blood
Casualties of War
The Deer Hunter
Uncommon Valor

A few things:

1. I think Platoon started the Stereotype of the Vietnam movie, not the other way around.

2. I think rumor of war, Apocalypse now and deer hunter were much better.

3. I swear I saw a different ending in the tv version on one viewing.

4. At TAMU a friend invited me to see a screening of platoon. It was in a tiny theater on campus. Like maybe 25 people: I had never seen it. We watched it and then a dude in black stood up and started answering questions. It was Oliver stone.

I like your list, but would add Bat-21 probably under Platoon. And Good Morning, Vietnam needs to be in there too.

China Beach and Tour of Duty were decent Vietnam TV shows.

It drives me nuts when people say they loved FMJ but only for the first hour.

The second act is so much better.

I'll admit that the first time I saw FMJ (high school, in theater), I was so stunned by the intensity of the first act that the second was a bit of a blur. On subsequent viewings you appreciate the second much more.

Same with Saving Private Ryan. You kind of needed the break when they get their assignment after enduring the beach landing.

I used to only enjoy the 1st part of FMJ, but now I enjoy the 2nd half. I don't know if the boot camp portion is over played, over stereotyped, or what but the Vietnam part is really well done.

It's also not even close to what Marine boot camp is actually like.

Plus the second half has Animal Mother.
