New year; new thread.

Just saw Jason Isbell at The Bomb Factory in Dallas. Two observations:

1. Dude can really play the guitar.
2. He is the best songwriter of this generation. He's a true poet.

Anyone ever seen/heard of Schism, the "longest touring (since 2001) Tool tribute band?" They're in Dallas/Houston this weekend.

In 3 weeks

Bummed I missed last year's where Isbell joined.

To keep the Isbell theme going, he just announced new dates, including coming back to Houston. I haven't heard too many good things about the Sugarland venue but hell, I'll give it a shot.

Same. After I get my kids out of the house in a couple of years, I'm going to this.

Shows lined up so far...

G3 (Satch, Petrucci, Collen)
Stryper
Jimmy Eat World

Many more to come. Working on a bucket list type schedule for the summer instead of one per week like last year.

yeah, smart financial shows so far have just been lifeless IMO. the venue is nice enough and the sound is fine, but there is no energy. too big? crowds that are there just to see a show vs. fans? I dunno.

I saw Lumineers and Avett Bros there in '17.

I'll go back for Isabell though

are you seeing presale or just the 1/12 10am ticketmaster?

Totally agree 100%. Haven't been back since Sting.

I've been amazed at the "rock" shows that have come through there. Can't fathom a metal show in that venue.

I also thought that the seating got way too wide too close to stage. Hence, unless you were in middle sections, you were pretty skewed to the side, past the stage in front of a wall.

Haven't seen any presale info.

My one complaint about the Isbell show at Revention was that they put seats on the floor and it didn't have the energy from the crowd I hoped for. I'm not wild about going to see him in Sugarland being that it is bigger and is another show with seats, but he's so good I'll overlook the venue's downfalls.

Only other show on my list so far is going to the In Bloom festival here in Houston whichever night QOTSA is headlining.

Sevendust - NYE at Canton Hall (ended well after midnight so I'm counting it as 2018 )

Upcoming:
Possibly Black Label Society and Corrosion of Conformity this weekend at the Bomb Factory
Franks and Deans (fun punk rock band from Vegas -covers of Rat Pack classics) 1/20 at Three Links

Will see Frank Turner when he rolls through (dates TBA)
Same for Sevendust when they tour after the new album drops

Definitely going to CoC/Black Label in Houston on Monday! New album for CoC, can't wait I haven't seen them since the "In The Arms Of God" tour probably 10+ years ago.

Might go with a bud to see Pinback on the 19th with a bud at WOMH.

Definitely going to Isbell at Smart Financial, even though I agree with the aforementioned gripes about the venue. Can't miss Isbell though, he's just incredible.

well that was ridiculous to buy Isbell tix.

Mobile never showed seats available. Regular started with seats in 105, then on refresh up into the 200s, then no seats, then worse 200s....finally after 8 minutes at least found seats in center 103 but row S. Such a garbage site...and $33 in fees of course...F ticketmaster.

Disagree. Smarte is the best large venue in West / Southwest Houston. If you live in Houston, that will be funny to you. Also, as an Old, I prefer to have good parking, a comfy seat, mixed drinks, and a relaxed setting to see my favorite 80s bands play before they die.

OK, I think I got your joke about the best in that area.

I'm old(er) too these days but being able to stand with excitement at a song/artist and being told to sit added to my distaste. I appreciate seats are expensive but just don't get people going to concerts and getting pissed at people around them wanting to get into the show and standing for the fun.

I know, I know. Old man yelling at crowd.

Amen!!!

First 5 minutes it can't find jack. Then I get 103 dead center row T. I keep exploring and that seems the best so I checkout. Get to put in my CC (it had changed since my last purchase) I typo and hit backspace and for some reason the browser interprets that as a backspace (aka go back a page) and I lose the tickets!!!

Then I get on iPhone and again find 103. This time and it tells me wrong security #. I try like 5 times KNOWING it's correct. Times out and I lose tickets!!! Turns out it's the wrong expiration date. Nice error message @$$ hats!!!

Finally get section 104 aisle on the center, row N. Not bad, but geez what a pain!!

This is why I love places like Revention with just a big open GA. Venues like this everyone grabs whatever there is, then holds in their carts for 10+ minutes waiting to see if they can get better and it's just a nerve racking cluster!

Here is a great display of the headaches of seated venues. An hour after they went on sale, numerous times telling me it couldn't find seats, here is what the seating looks like now that everyone has got their seats and closed their multiple browser that were holding seats in their carts.

SMDH. Just glad I got seats and it's over
Sazerac
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Just ridiculous. If I changed the seats to just search for $60 tix it would never find any. Had to search all.

Finally got 103 S, but looking at your map there are clearly rows closer than that still open. What a fuster cluck....

It's a 6400 capacity amphitheater for a show in the middle of the week. Don't even bother with Ticketmaster, just buy tickets from Stubhub at half-price the week before the show.

Ohhh Matt and Kim on tour. I've always wanted to see them live. Their albums are great running music when I'm training. Also they have a great YouTube channel. Kim blew out her knee last year on stage and had surgery and they talk about that, have wacky adventures, and they just seem like awesome people in general.

Saw Katy Perry in SA...it was a good SHOW, but she barely signs. Honestly, I paid to see Carly Rae Jepsen's set, and that was so worth it.

Going to see The Eagles at Minute Maid Park this summer with hubby,19 year old son, dad and sister

Also this summer, going to Foreigner/Whitesnake/Jason Bonham at The Woodlands. Our son is coming to that one too. Poor kid was born in the wrong era, musically speaking.

This is all part of the "see as many of your favorite bands before they retire/die" plan that was put in motion a few years ago. And yes, even though Glenn Frey is gone, I'll take partial Eagles over no Eagles

You know I always thought G3 was missing a 60 year old muscly, sweaty, shirtless dude. Looks like they finally got that covered.

Hell yeah, I'll be there, always cool to see BLS but really stoked to see CoC, haven't seen them since their last album tour like 10 years ago. Hopefully Zakk is over whatever sickness he was dealing with.

1/6 - Camper Van Beethoven + Cracker
1/27- Killers
4/27 - Slowdive
5/17 - Marcy Playground / Local H / Everclear

CVB / Cracker show was a good time, but a bit of a bummer since lead singer David Lowry was missing due to a bad case of the flu. Johnny Hickman took lead, and they still played the gig, even though it was without their frontman. Interesting to see a band pull together on the fly, and see what they'll do. Felt really improvised, which is kind of rare these days.

The Tool tribute band Schism down at Scout Bar on Saturday was very impressive. Very tight and cleanly played. Drummer and bassist especially spot-on. They dug deep into their catalog and an overall + show.
