I thought it was good. Felt more like a movie towards the end than a series.

When does The Deuce drop? Not sure if intentional comedy or not, but I approve.

The opening and closing had a very "Wire" feel. I really enjoyed it. James Franco was really good. The girl who played Abby, the student busted buying speed, is listed on IMDB as being 37! That doesnt seem right...

I enjoyed it immensely....not the plot so much it is gonna be a slow build I'm sure - but as a period piece in NYC especially seedy Times Square at the time it is fascinating. And the acting was very very good. the sets and period attire were brilliant too.

Really liked seeing other parts of the city especially NYU and Washington Sq. Park and Brooklyn areas in that time period.

I've spent a lot of time in NYC the last 2 years or so as my daughter goes to NYU. It is fascinating from that perspective alone.

Giuliani should be given a Nobel Peace Prize for what he did for cleaning up that city.

Quality show. Interested to see where it goes.

Well said. One of the best "world building" pieces of pop culture I've seen in a while. Just so incredibly fascinating. I wasn't expecting this level of acting either, especially from Franco, but this cast is phenomenal from top to bottom. Overall, it's great to have David Simon back and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Those who were alive I the '70s... please tell me it wasn't *that* weird/depressing. It's like the entire world was under a spell and going through some incredibly awkward/rebellious phase. My dad is the exact age as the student chick who got arrested, so I get it, but man, this pilot really underlined just how alien that time period was. Granted, the subject matter/setting was the extreme of the extreme, but still. It's like American culture was going through puberty or something. What a strange period in history.

I think people will probably say the same thing about today in 30 years FWIW.

When comes to politics and certain cultural touchstones, absolutely. As for style, though, I feel like we've reached a plateau of sorts. We finally figured out how clothes should fit, what looks good, etc. There's really no where left for suits, jeans, etc. to go. So I honestly don't see fashion, at least, changing as drastically as it did from then 'til now. I think the next step is how technology will be better-integrated with our clothing/wardrobe, which could have some drastic effects, but we'll see.

All I know is that I would have no problem living in the '50s/'60s. I grew up in the '80s and loved that decade as well. But the biggest emotional reaction I had to this pilot was, "Thank God I wasn't alive in the '70s." Nothing about that decade appeals to me in any way, save for maybe the classic rock of the era.

Not really trying to derail, but I've noticed that when you look at the basics of what people wear over time it pretty much stands the test. Jeans, polo shirts, simple button ups, tshirts, etc. My old man grew up in the 60's and went to college/law school in the 70's and pictures of him back them are pretty similar to what I consider normal now. The basics have never really gone out of style. Its when people try to create new fashion trends is when things get silly. 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, all had their own weird phases, but I'd agree that now, things appear to have somewhat 'normalized'

Now that my derail is finished, I think the show has a tremendous amount of potential. Like Treme, and the Wire before it, the setting becomes one of the main characters of the show. Simon is brilliant in this fact and its one of the reasons I love his work so much. You can tell he puts a tremendous amount of work in authenticating the setting of his stories and its one aspect that makes his work stand out so much.

I think it has a lot of potential and I'd agree that the acting was far above what I was expecting. The old Wire characters just make it that much better.

It may be just me, but I think Franco is a ridiculous talent. I will give anything he is in a chance even if I know it'll be god awful.

Chris is one of the pimps. He's the bigger dude who has the really curly Afro. Aaaaaaaaa nd because I just realized that describes almost the entire cast....

It took me about half of episode 1 to realize that was him

And full disclosure, I haven't watched EP2 so he may have shown up there. I don't recall him in EP1 and I'm pretty sure I would have recognized him on his voice alone. Could be wrong though.

I'm still getting a little freaked out that CC cut the under arm of one of his *****s with a razor. Knife/blade slices like that anywhere on the body (in movies or real life) wig me out, and the idea that someone would do that to someone's underarm on purpose is just......

When those came out I thought "well, those were EXACTLY what I would expect from Maggie Gyllenhall. Average in every way"

I didn't know how much I missed Sepinwall reviewing a David Simon show until just now. For me, Sepinwall was such a huge part of truly understanding/experiencing/loving The Wire, and now with The Deuce journeying more and more into similar territory, it feels like old times in all the best ways...
