I'm not a fan of country music, but being a guitar player....I appreciate a good player when I hear/see one. I consider Brad Paisley and Vince Gill to be among the best. But due to my limited exposure, I'd like to know who else is out there that I may be missing/have missed. TIA

Not a fan of his stuff from the last 5-6 years but Keith Urban can actually play a pretty mean guitar when he wants.

Ya...forgot about Keith. I've seen some stuff he's done with John Mayer that was excellent.

Look up Johnny Hiland, dude is ridiculous.

Also, classic players like Danny Gatton, just sick. For just guitar playing, check out The Hellecasters, group of session players (Will Ray, John Jorgenson, Jerry Donahue), their stuff is unreal.

One of my favorite players of all time is Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam, countless others), his style is so tasteful. Criminally underrated/unknown.

Another good one. Obviously better known for doing Hee Haw, but that dude was a fine picker.

But nobody wanted to hire a guitar man.

few years ago, I saw a Crossroads episode with Urban & John Fogerty. Like that guy's playing right away. He said as younger guy, his band in Austrailia played CCR covers

Has anyone mentioned James Burton?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Burton

I don't know a lot of early(pre 70s) country music in regards to the studio musicians and their subsequent influences. But as an amateur guitarist myself, you can't help to notice the "sound" and influence this picker had on County music. Many of those same licks and chops are used today.

Here is the song:

And for grins, here is the "lesson" on how it was played.

A true virtuoso!

I'll second Doyle Dykes, what he can do is simply amazing. Glen Campbell was one of the top studio guitarists before he hit it big. Roy Clark, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins (of course).

One of the guitar players that Chet considered to be among the best is Tommy Emmanuel. Not strictly a country arist, per se, but many of his songs come close to it.
