Blockbuster sequels that flopped

I was browsing through Netflix and saw Alice Through The Looking Glass was added. I realized I had completely forgotten this movie even existed, much less that it had released this year.

Looked it up on Wikipedia to see how bad of a flop it was. It made $299 million WORLDWIDE. The first movie broke $1 billion and made more domestically than the sequel did globally.

What the hell went wrong with this movie? Even if it was a bad movie, bad sequels can still kill at the box office. (Transformers, etc.) I mean, how did Disney botch the marketing campaign this badly? Maybe they knew they had a stinker on their hands and refused to put any more money into it?

Is there any sequel that flopped this badly compared to its predecessor? Some franchises die out slowly, but I've never seen one drop off so dramatically in one movie.

I guess technically, Rogue One dropped off worse since it made $1 billion less than TFA.

I'd guess that I don't think it had the same amount of marketing that the first did. It wasn't Tim Burton (although I don't know if that should matter anymore, since he's absolutely terrible now) and I think people are growing tired of Johnny Depp.

Also the first one was ****ing terrible, so maybe people wised up

And not in all cases, but I think taking too much time can ruin a sequels chances. People just lose interest. This one was 6 years after the first. Sin City 2 was definitely a casualty of this. Nobody cared anymore and it was no longer cutting edge.

I saw it and.....you are better off having not seen it.

Really bad...like I've tried to block it from my memory.

I rated it as the worst movie I saw in the theaters in 2016 - there was one worse I saw on video only. Painful.

Box office was bad too...budget of $165million and it made $103 million domestic. $389M worldwide but still thats not even breakeven using hollywood averages ($165+$80 million for dist/mktg = $245M and they would have netted about $145M from the BO...so a loss of at least $100 Million).

Just curious, what was the movie that was worse?

Good call on Sin City 2. Not that the first one was that much of a box office success.

I see it's on Netflix. Worth watching?

A lot of these craptastic sequels had major pieces that didn't return, actors, writers and/or directors. The moronic assertion being that the lemming public will still show up bc of the movie name. Independence Day 2 without will smith. Speed 2 had no Keanu. Caddyshack 2 was missing Murray and dangerfield. Jaws 2 no spielberg. Son of the mask no Jim Carey.

Batman vs Superman

I would agree with the Independence Day sequel, it was just disappointing and easy to see why it failed. I also saw it in theaters.....

BvS did well monetarily iirc, even if it had issues. While I was pretty disappointed with it, I'm not sure I'd call it a flop.

No clue. Even though I absolutely love the first one and have seen it plenty of times, I just can't get interested in the sequel. Never heard anything good about it though, so probably not.

Joe dirt 2 was bad. You know how folks exaggerate a bit and are like, "omg worst movie of all time, worse than Hitler"? Well Joe dirt 2 was that bad and more since it really wasn't any good and it was broken plot wise (it really made no sense and I think that's why it was released for free).

This. I am talking about box office flops that were sequels to hugely successful movies.

Not as much as you'd think. LW still made over $600 million even though it wasn't that great.

It was on a cable a ton for a while. Never watched the whole thing, but it looks grindingly slow. That style is great for something like 300, but it's a waste on people exchanging glares or talking on the telephone. And they're always in a dimly lit room or something, so you're almost assuming that the artwork is great because you're only seeing glimpses of details.
