Recently read Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy as well and you nailed the feel of it with book 2. It just didn't progress the plot near enough and was a big game of 3 way chicken.

Awesome ending to the trilogy though.

There is a Wideness. It was good and I enjoyed the story, but the writing was not very polished.

4) Neil Gaiman's "Norse Mythology" (B)
5) Louis Bayard's "The Pale Blue Eye" (B+)
6) Anthony Grey's "Saigon" (A-)
7) Brandon Sanderson's "Steelheart" (B+)
8) Preston & Child's "The Obsidian Chamber" (B+)
9) Neil Gaiman's "Anansi Boys" (A)
10) Sharon Kay Penman's "A King's Ransom" (A)
11) Michael Gruber's "Night of the Jaguar" (B)
12) Jeff Shaara's "The Frozen Hours: A Novel of the Korean War" (A-)
13) Douglas Clegg's "Neverland" (B-)
14) Erik Larson's "Dead Wake". Novel about the sinking of the Lusitania (B+) How I would rank Larson's NF books The Devil in the White City, In the Garden of the Beasts, Isaac's Storm, Dead Wake, Thunderstruck.
15) Noah Gordon's "The Physician" (B+)

Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy
16) "Mistborn: The Final Empire". Reminded me of only other book of his I'd read "Steelheart", but a more complete and well thought out version (A-)
17) "The Well of Ascension" More Game of Thronesy with Kings fighting each other (B+)
18) "The Hero of Ages" Good finish, probably hit 2nd trilogy sometime. (A)

19) Joseph Kanon's "Defectors". Typical spy story, but a little different in use of actual and fictional 1950s defectors to USSR to show what their lives were like. (B+)

20) Joe R. Lansdale's novella "Bubba Ho-Tep" A short one. Saw a prequel to "Bubba Ho-Tep" coming out next month so jumped on $0.99 ebook price. What luck, looked on cable and cult movie of book was available. They actually followed story very closely, other than adding in a scarab and leaving off a jackoff scene.(A-)

21) Dan Brown's "Origin". Like his other books it will not be sold in religious stores. Hard to describe without giving spoilers. Will say part thriller, part detective, part modern science, part philosophical. It kept me very motivated to keep reading so for that reason give it an (A).

22) Noah Gordon's "Shaman". Like the first book in his trilogy "The Physician" does great job of bringing the life in the time period (1840s- 1860s) to life. (A-)

23) Jo Nesbo's "The Devil's Star". Ended a mini trilogy in Harry Hole series. (B+)

24) Daniel Suarez's "Freedom", sequel to "Daemon". While not as good reviews as "Daemon" I actually liked better. Just got into it more. (A-)

Next: Brandon Sanderson's "The Way of Kings"

Kind of forgot about this thread so I dont think I've posted at all in 2017 on it, but I've had a fairly productive year of reading as I'm going to be above my average of 6 books per year or about one every other month.

  • How not to go Broke Ranching (Walt Davis) - A good book on how to run your farm/ranch/family land, you dont have to have thousands of acres or anything to get some good knowledge out of this book.
  • Winning 42: The Strategy & Lore of the National Game of Texas (D Robertson) - I love playing 42 and already consider myself a very capable player but it was nice to read some of the history on the game, and see a few strategies I had not considered before. Also great if you want to learn the game and have never played.
  • The Time it Never Rained (E Kelton) - An account of one of the worst drought periods in Texas history and what all the farmers and rancher had to endure it. Very good book.
  • The Informant: A True Story (K Eichenwald) - A book about the true events of the price fixing scandal ADM faced in the 90s and the guy who helped get them caught. I work in grain merchandising and deal with big Ag companies like ADM a lot so I found it really interesting.
  • Treasure Island (R Stevenson) - Yep, a classic. I've always liked pirate stuff and had never read the novel where so many modern day myths, legends, and pop culture references come from so I finally sat down and read the book.
  • Tom Clancy's Point of Contact (M Waden) - I've enjoyed the Jack Ryan Jr. and the Campus storyline that other authors have been keeping up with since Clancy died. However this book just didnt grab me as much as some of the others and I thought the plot was a little bit weaker.
  • Game Dog (R Wolters) - Want to eventually get a lab and train it myself for hunting purposes. Thought this was a good, informative book for someone wanting info & help for all stages of dog training.

Currently reading Dan Brown's Origin. This one kind of sneaked up on me, I wasnt aware he had another novel coming out this year. Angels & Demons is one of my all time favorite books and I've really enjoyed most of his others but I will say his two most recent books: The Lost Symbol and Inferno have been his weaker books (although I still liked them for the most part). about 100 pages in to Origin and liking it so far.

Up next will be The Templars: The Rise and Spectacular Fall of God's Holy Warriors by Dan Jones.

Also finally took the plunge and picked up a kindle paperwhite for reading while traveling and its ecosystem.

Agree that last two Dan Brown books were the weakest. I did enjoy Origin more than those although hard to discuss without spoilers. Certainly heavier on the philosophy/religious side, but it did keep me interested.

Good to hear, I'm hoping to finish it this week. My Dan Brown order goes:

Angels & Demons
Da Vinci Code
Deception Point
Digital Fortress
Inferno
Lost Symbol

Guess I will see where Origin lands but I'm liking what I've read so far....

Glad I just found this thread with a month and a half to go. Definitely going to keep an eye out for next year's.

1. Crucial Conversations - Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, and Switzler

2. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership - John C. Maxwell

3. Lee Child - Killing Floor, Die Trying, Tripwire, Running Blind, and I'm making my way through Echo Burning currently. Got on kind of a Jack Reacher kick and haven't been able to put them down since I happened to spot one in Barnes and Noble a couple months ago.
