FYI - ROUND ONE VOTING IS CLOSED

This is the FIRST ROUND - you may vote for between 1 and 12 albums in this round.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BG3JMVW

Entries are alphabetical by band name - if you can't find it look for "The" preceding the band name. I've included all legit nominated bands/albums that were actual debut albums.

Voting will remain open for approx. 4 days - concluding Friday sometime.

The Top 12 from this voting round will make the semifinals - In the semifinals you can then vote for your top 4.
The top 4 will make the finals - in the finals you can vote for 1.

Just need some Townes.

I wonder how many of these albums were initially panned by Rolling Stone and other critics?
VanZandt92

Not Springsteen Asbury Park.

A little surprised to see Liz Phair on there.

I can't vote Talking Heads because I didn't hear that until much later in life. No established opinion.

English Beat is interesting. I had no idea which album their good music was from.

Damn this is going to take some time.

So far I have REM Murmur, The Clash, The Doors.

Some of these albums haven't undergone the test of time yet. Like Mumford and Sons.

Ha, thanks for including KOL. I didn't expect it to be in the voting. Nor do I think it is the greatest debut album ever. I was reminiscing back at how good the album is, as a KOL fan.

RUSH where it at?

I just thought of another that never got mentioned....Foo Fighters.

RUSH never got nominated....and the debut album while it has a couple of good songs was really such a departure from later Rush albums - due to both Peart as a drummer and Peart as a lyricist not involved - and the fact that they were mostly trying to be Zeppelin-esque on that first album I think keeps people from thinking it is a great debut album really....like greatest ever anyway.

Does bring up though what I think is another interesting one.....greatest rock band album from a complete or significant band overhaul or direction change.

Rush - Fly By Night would be on that once Neil Peart came on board
Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac (1975) when they added Buckingham and Nicks
Genesis - ...And Then There Were Three... after the departure of Peter Gabriel
Jefferson Starship - Dragon Fly after ditching Jefferson Airplane and retooling (not Starship the abomination of the 80's)
Eagles - Hotel California after departure of country roots (Bernie Leadon) and adding rock guitarist Joe Walsh shortly after adding Don Felder as well (who barely appeared on previous album One of These Nights)
Yes - 90125 major retooling after 1981 breakup and adding Trevor Rabin

That's cool. I agree Working Man was incredible, but the remainder of the album I don't actually recall very well.

last courtesy reminder bump....first round ends manana probably early morning.....i moved it up a day as voting has trailed off steeply.

Interesting voting - some as expected but some real interesting ones in the top 15 or so currently so the semifinal 12 (plus ties) will be interesting - thats all I'm gonna say I'm not lobbying for anything here.

Not saying it deserves to be on the list, but I think Linkin Park's debut is one of the highest selling of all time. Could be wrong, but I thought I read that somewhere.

edit - may be highest selling debut of 21st century.

must be 21st century because I can tell you Pearl Jam's 10 and GnR Appetite for Destruction have sold more than Linkin Park's debut Hybrid Theory.

in fact i searched a bit just now.....

This list has it at #10 in all-time debut albums in sales:

http://www.therichest.com/expensive-lifestyle/entertainment/top-10-best-selling-debut-albums-in-us-history/

and apparently we left 3 big entries off this vote/loist

Britney
Backstreet Boys
Jewel

don't think those would have cracked th Top 12 in votes though - lol.

ok....was never nominated by anyone....and i'll give the counterargument. but don't take it the wrong way I love the Eagles.

not a bad album certainly...but far from the eagles best....barely went platinum and that was only in 2001 after it had been out for 29 years. It was never higher than #22 on the album chart in 1972. Certainly didn't set the world on fire, i think those songs (witchy woman, lyin eyes, take it easy) became more well known after they became more well known - in other words as "oldies" and on classic rock stations and really as part of the original Greatest Hits album which became such a huge seller (more so than the albums they came from).

Seems like in a lot of these cases if their debut was one of the best ever it was also that bands best album or close to it anyway. Certainly thats not universal. But when people think of the eagles they think Hotel Calfornia not the debut album.

That's fair. I guess it depends what we're looking for too - are these like, record-breaking, burst on the scene debuts? Or just the best first-entries out there? Because record sales and so on may not be of importance, depending on the criteria.

The only reason the Eagles self-titled comes to mind, to be honest, is because it may be one of the best "first album, first track" selections. Like they could have started and stopped at Take It Easy and they'd still be a more successful band than 99% of the ones out there.

Good stuff overall, though - none of this is meant as a critique. I should have nominated the album but at the same time it probably wouldn't have made any waves - like a 68th-best March Madness team.

Ok I listened to both The Smiths and Black Sabbath and neither gets the nod. The Smiths had one of the best guitarists of the era, but that isnt' the album. It was too much Morrissey.

And the Black Sabbath first album felt like they were barely getting off the ground.

This one easly beats out Black Sabbath:

I hope Arcade Fire makes it through. Funeral is an amazing album in and of itself. The fact that it's a debut makes it only more so interesting.

I also voted Pearl Jam. I discovered them after a nasty break up. Used to rock to that when driving to Surfside when a storm came in.

RESULTS of first round

Well the first round results are in I'm going to mostly refrain from commenting but one of the albums to make the semifinals really surprised me but that's all I'm gonna say about that.onto the SemiFinals..

I'm not going to tell you the vote totals of the Top 12 semifinalists don't want that to influence the voting in the next round I can update it after. This is displayed in a random order.

Top 12 all had 25+ votes (20% or more) with exactly 100 votes cast. The most votes received was 58/100.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced
Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction
Van Halen - Van Halen
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Boston - Boston
Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood
Pearl Jam - Ten
Eminem - The Slim Shady LP
Weezer - Weezer (Blue Album)
Beastie Boys - Licensed To Ill
N.W.A - Straight Outta Compton
Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More

Side note: personally a little disappointed the big 3 Punk landmark albums did not fare better - I thought at least one deserved a semifinal place. Perhaps the vote was split between The Clash (13), The Ramones (8) and The Sex Pistols (10).....oh well.......not even the Beatles made the semifinals but they were very close.

Somehow I missed this thread originally, damnit. I love these surveys.
Not that anyone gives a crap since it only received 3 votes but Rated R is NOT the debut album from QOTSA. That would be the self-titled album that came out 2 years prior in 1998. My first listen to this group was Rated R so my guess it is a common mistake but for the 3 people that voted for Rated R you should really give the debut a listen. Pretty raw sound comparatively but still good.
