How long do you want to ignore this user?
So, I grew up listening to Metallica, System of a Down, Tool, Dream Theater, all that stuff. I stopped listening to those genres the past few years, have really gotten into hip-hop... anyway, I started listening to Mastodon randomly and wanted to see if ya'll had any other recommendations for metal? The only thing I really don't like is screaming, or that low gutteral style of yelling vocals - in small doses, it's alright, but not all the time.

Thanks in advance!

I've started listening to Five Finger Death Punch on Pandora and found some good music.

"Five Finger Death Punch" and "good music" should never be used in the same sentence.

Avenged Sevenfold
In this Moment
Pretty Reckless
Halestorm

My pandora station started with Avenged Sevenfold, and is now really good.

I occasionally get the random POD song and I quickly thumbs down it.

Five Finger Death Punch comes up alot due to associated genre.

I love the Scorps but the early stuff with Uli Jon Roth is my favorite. Very underrated stuff.

I think the stuff Maiden put out after 1999 is very good as well, particularly A Matter of Life & Death. The most recent was meh for me but the rest of their post-reunion stuff is really good especially if you like Dream Theater as the OP mentioned.

Agree with the Symphony X recommendation. If you like Dream Theater here are some other excellent prog metal bands that you would probably like:

Redemption
Fates Warning
Pain of Salvation
Conception
Kamelot
Threshold
Ayreon
Star One

I would also recommend All is One album by Orphaned Land. They started out with a lot of cookie monster vocals but have slowly moved to more melodic singing with only occasional growling.

And the newest Queensryche album is very very good.

Not sure who, but couple of fine chaps on this board recommended Devin Townsend a few years ago, and I am forever grateful.

I'm fairly eclectic in my musical taste but always gravitate back towards hard rock/metal with some interest in stoner rock and alternative. I paid attention to the Devin Townsend (Project as he's usually working - DTP) recommendation and my interest grew fastly.

Devin is a guitar virtuoso - Steve Vai protege somewhat (I think), who has evolved emotionally and technically greatly through the years. He started out in thrash metal and moved on, eventually gaining somewhat fame the heavy metal band called 'Strapping Young Lad' and basically invented the term 'skullet' - bald with mullet. Has well documented bouts with substance abuse and bipolar disorder.

Musical style combination of a diverse mix of hard rock, progressive metal, ambient and new age.

Devin just released his Live at Royal Albert blu-ray. Second set is a "By Request" set which contains a ton of great songs. It'll be on YouTube somewhere.

I second the recommendation for Tesseract. Based on your description they fit the bill for very heavy yet little to no screaming almost perfectly. They are also very groovy and have lots of cool riffs.

Also check out the album "Language" by The Contortionist. There is pretty minimal screaming but the whole album is pretty brilliant. Maybe even my favorite prog rock/metal album in the last couple of years.
