This. I know the BBQ snobs think the only places worth going to require you to get in line by 8:00am, wait 2 hours, and pray for a chance to be blessed by the pitmaster before they run out. Truth is BBQ is not exactly rocket surgery. You get to the point where there's just a marginal difference between Rudy's other places.

You had to be in line by 6 am at Snow's.

That was such good BBQ.

There's so much great barbecue in Texas that it's difficult to remember when chains like Luther's were successful. Rudy's was really the first to and the best at creating consistent, high quality barbecue across locations.
It has been so long, but I don't remember the BBQ necessarily at Luthers, but I remember their hamburgers were good as well as the onion rings.

Dickey's or Bill Millers is the worst?

At least with Bills, you can get their fried chicken.

I like a Bill Miller's po' boy plus brisket sandwich, but I don't really consider it great barbecue. It's just a good sandwich.

I think Miller's breakfast tacos are pretty solid…
Their salsa (they call it hot sauce) is actually REALLY good.

If you do a side by side taste test between Rudy's and Snow's brisket and you think the difference is marginal, your taste buds are jacked and you should see a doctor about that.

There's nothing wrong with Rudy's. It's good bbq. But it ain't anywhere near the same level as Snow's and many others. Hell, you want great bbq that doesn't require hours of waiting in line, hit Southside in Elgin or Bastrop.

As far as Bill Miller, it ain't the place you go for a bbq fix. It's where you go when you need a good, cheap lunch served quickly. Black bread and them hashbrowns? Hell yeah.

I would point out that most of their BBQ sandwiches are cheaper than just about any national chain sandwich.

It's a good way to eat cheap these days if you're in need of a quick, inexpensive, and tasty lunch.

These needed to be said. Never understood why people hate on Rudy's. It's not too of the line, but still tasty Que and great comfort food. Trust me, when you live in the Midwest you'd kill for some Rudy's.
hell id kill to have rudy's in my current town an hour outside of houston. I cant tell you how many mom and pop BBQ places ive been to along the gulf coast that cant hold a candle to Rudy's.

Southside probably isn't the best BBQ in Elgin and I grew up 8 miles from there

Meyer's is pretty damn good too, but I like Southside's brisket better.

But I do like Meyer's tamales.

I feel like most of the locals prefer Meyers over SS. I've had crazy amounts of both

Also, I tend to hit Southside more often as I tend to end up in Bastrop more often. It's rare that I'm up to Elgin these days.

A lot of 1882 Recipe Southside hot guts end up on my grill though.

never been to southside, but they must do really well for themselves. the owner had a weekend getaway just down the road from my family place. they sold it a couple years ago for over $2 mil.

I'm now in Colorado Springs, and there's a Rudy's here that until recently I considered the best bbq in Colorado (that's not saying much). Very grateful to have a consistently good spot to go for lunch.

There's a new place called the Chuckwagon that's very good. Only had it once but it certainly held up to this Texan's standard. Not as good as the elite stuff in central Texas, but exceptional when compared to the rest of Colorado's offerings.

Used to live in Austin so I tried just about all the well known spots. I would put Snow's #1 then Franklin's then Terry Blacks. Really liked Hard 8 in Stephenville too. And some friends of mine used to run Hwy 29 bbq in Bertram. I thought it was extremely good but it was hard to get enough consistent business in a small town so they shut down after about 5 years.

Been out of central Texas for about 8 years now though so I'm sure a lot has changed.

To me, Rudy's is the McDonalds of BBQ. It's okay, and will never be bad. But, depending on where you are, you can likely find better.

The difference there is that McDonald's is never good. You probably should've used Sonic as your example.

Our favorite is the one outside of Schlitterbahn. The ones in Austin are all sub par!

Yeah, better example. Actually I haven't been to McDonalds in 10+ years, I'd guess.

I guess I've been trying to express disdain for Rudy's. My FIL loves Rudy's and I can't understand why. He's very plain...doesn't eat vegetables or fruit and prefers seasonings to stay in the cabinet or at the store. Boggles my mind. His fav foods are brown or white.

I've gone every Saturday morning but once this football season. McGriddle combo with an iced coffee.

Then back to the house for football all day long

Must be nice. For me, Saturdays & Sundays in the fall are usually for chores or work (the one I get paid for), but I usually get mostly uninterrupted time to watch the Aggies.

Buccees BBQ is sufficient when you're hungry and heading out of town and don't want to stop at Mc Donald's/Sonic.

If you want BBQ no matter what, you go to Rudy's, Southside or maybe even Iron Works.

If you want good BBQ, you go to Snows/Blacks/Franklins and maybe even Salt Lick.

Try Meyers BBQ next time you're near Elgin. If you're coming in from the Austin area on 290. Just keep going till you're on the other side of town. It's located on the right side of the hwy. It's just before the last light

If you are ever up towards Broomfield, try Waynes. Owner is a Texan and BBQ is legit.

However, the original at Leon Springs is a whole level above the copies, and very good. Started going there at least 25 years ago. Funny how a copy of a copy of a copy fades out.

Rudys, the original Macaroni Grill (it was great) and Nacho Mama's. We loved it out there in the late 80's/early 90's.

I'm a fan of their fried chicken, and their brisket tacos aren't bad road food in the morning - with their salsa, of course.
It only took me a year to figure out this place is nuts!

Rudy's is consistently good. It's not great. It's not amazing. It's not life changing. I don't go around telling everyone about it. But I would never turn it down and I'm always happy when I walk out.
