Can anyone direct me to a good source for seeds that would grow well in Central Texas? I've used some seeds from the big home depot cart but I figure there's got to be some better varieties out there. Also, if anyone has some good resources such as websites and books for specifically Texas or Central Texas, that would be helpful.

I'm also looking to start a small orchard for my personal consumption if anyone has good suggestions on tree species that do well and good places to buy them either a well known tree supply or a good mail order.

You should post this on the "Home Improvement" board. You're likely to get more traction over there.

Nearly every county Ag extension office has a master gardener's program. Start with the master gardeners in your county.

Second consulting the Master Gardener for your regional AgriLife Extension. They generally have a good reference sheet for what to grow when and where for your region.

Also, my wife uses this company as her current seed source:

I would post this on the outdoors board. Lots of gardeners there.

Yep, Outdoor board. Find the thread on gardening (very long but lots and lots of traffic all about everything under the sun (no pun intended) with gardening).

Edit:

Here is the thread

Easiest way would to just get one of your friends that works at the nuclear plant to send you some plutonium. Mix it with whatever you're trying to grow and voila! Just be careful. What you grow may turn out to be highly addictive.

I hate the derail a good derail...

In my experience, where you order the seeds doesn't it matter as much as timing and care. I ordered most of my greens and root vegetables from Johnny's in Maine. Know when to plant spring and fall to work around the dead spot in the summer. Have a good watering system on a timer and invest in shade cloth.

I get all the majority of my seeds and plants from Producer's Co-Op and have had good luck. You might have a local co-op that you can check out. What isn't used gets stored in an airtight container and after a couple years they get tossed. If you want specialty tomato, tomatillo, pepers or eggplant seeds, we've used Tomato Growers Supply Company. They ain't cheap though.

I order from Baker Seeds every year. They are heirloom seeds. I planted some I had bought 5 years ago, and they grew and did great.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.
