I loved Luby's fried fish back in its day.

Couple weeks ago, Mrs Toddy and I flew from Knoxville to San Antonio to celebrate some family birthdays. Drove to the Stone Oak area and observed that the Luby's on 1604 was still alive and well. My daughter told me that since their announcement that place has been packed.

Fried rectangle fish with tartar sauce, macaroni & cheese, green beans, a roll, pecan pie and tea. Best meal a 10 year old kid could ever want.

God bless you sir. This is exactly how I used to do it and loved every minute of it.

They were talking about Lubys on a local radio station here in San Antonio several weeks or maybe even months ago when they announced they were filing bankruptcy (or whatever the news was).

People were calling in a be reminiscing over their experiences over the years and there was a bit of a theme to the calls. Apparently at some point they starting putting "fancier" things on the menu and they cranked the price up. That's when some of the callers stopped going. Thought it was interesting to hear their tales.

All they need to do is change the name and logo, and all the people who think it's for old people will change their mind.

It needs to be something like "HmF//d" in a modern font to satisfy the trendy preferences of millennials.

This is true! A huge letdown! Tasted like any other fish stick you find in the frozen food aisle!

the food sucking and the outdated cafeteria style are the problem, not the name.

So, in 1971, I was living in the RGV. The family went to church in Harlingen. We either went home and had my Mom's roast beef, little white potatoes, rolls, etc... or we went to Luby's. I think the Luby's in Harlingen was one of the original owner's first 4 Lubys.

For me, as a growing and skinny teen, I usually got the fish square, tarter sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, a roll, and maybe something else. Then a piece of pie. It was all very good, made from scratch, and served very fast. (Whoa to the preacher that over preached and we got beat to the long line by the Baptists or didn't get home in time for the Cowboys kickoff).

The food at Luby's used to be very very good. They also had a very good compensation package for their managers. Paying very good money to managers that performed well - what a concept. Then maybe (?) 15 years ago that changed. And Luby's started the slow slide to being mediocre and then they are kaput.

RIP Luby's. The concept could still work today. Someone would just have to copy the old model of made from scratch food and very fast service.

As a kid growing up in the early 70's here in CS, our family would eat out maybe 2-3 times/month. Most of those would occur after church & we'd go to Wyatt's Cafeteria or Luby's when my mom didn't have a pot roast cooking. I'd ALWAYS get the fried fish at both places.
That thing was like crack to me. Mashed potatoes, mac & cheese & coconut cream pie sealed the meal.

I don't want to live on a planet without square fish and liver n onions.

In 70 years the Socialist have won without firing a single shot. This is their Cold War. A lukewarm congrats to the victors.

Our only hope is a Civil War, a very unlikely scenario OR secession of at least 10 states in the South and Midwest, again unlikely OR another Trump-like Presidential candidate that cuts through the political correctness, the social bullsh6t, to expose the corruption, the media(social) bias, the Dem lies and deceit. I fear it may be too late - I truly think it is.

Well you got me on that one, but pretty much everything else was prepared on site. And they did batter those fish squares in house. Unlike most chain restaurants that use Chef Mike for many of their meals, Luby's used to be old school.

I so love Luby's. The one by our house, like 200 yards away was the only all-u-can eat Luby's. They were trying a new concept out, it was also the oldest Luby's still operating, I wanna say it opened in 58'.

The all you could eat deal there was glorious, they just reduced their entree offerings and portion size and things were the same. Lunch was like $9 and dinner $11. We hit it up about maybe 7 to 10 times in the time frame they went to the all you could eat model.

To be able to get Liver and Onions and the square fish in one meal was spectacular. Place looked like it was doing well, but Covid killed it. It was crushing. On Friday nights they even had crawfish, and it wasnt bad at all.

Yeah, I do love the fish.

We are very big fans of their enchiladas. Very good .

Also the fried chicken.

Once in a while I get the veggie plate. Here in SA, there really isn't an alternative for fresh veggies.
