How long do you want to ignore this user?
Why does everyone (predominantly women aged 35 and older) say "ope" when suddenly encountering someone in a doorway, hallway, sidewalk, grocery store aisle, or any public way of pedestrian traffic? This is not a word but for some reason it's quite universal in its usage, like a substitute for the more appropriate phrase "excuse me."

It's a natural thing. Not sure why everyone makes the same sound, but they do.

Strange thing to be upset about.

I say it all the time. It's 100% involuntary. It just happens, i can't help it...

I don't say that. Typically I'll just stroke their ear lobe while staring intently in the person's eyes.

It's an expression of being startled or caught unawares but vocalized. Also, much less deliberate and easier to utter than excuse me.

I'm not upset. This is the GB, where a bunch of weirdos congregate to whine about the trivial and menial quirks of life. Because deep down we're miserable people with nothing better to do.

It's more like "upe." Not quite "ooops."

I think from now on I'm just going to stare at the other person and yell until I run out of breath

Why does everyone do something that you've observed to be universal in usage?

Let's dwell on this OP; we may eventually crack the code.
