How do you feel about them?
Handing out awards to every kid in every class.
Mom and dad , grandparents attend.. put the kid center stage to receive their "award".

IMO that's why our country has so many entitled kids and parents. When they don't receive their trophy they don't know how to react.

My neighbor teaches elementary school at College Station ISD and told me they have an award ceremony and they are mandated to hand out an award to every student.
I asked her the categories and she said it was up to them to create whatever they wanted as long as every kid received an award.

She did say most teachers don't like it.. was somewhat at least glad to hear that

My wife is a teacher and by the end of the year I have a
"Least Likely to Succeed" Award to one of her students based on her reports of his / her conduct, home environment, and parent - teacher conferences she's had.

Awards mean nothing if every kid gets one. Kids know it and quit caring by 1st grade.

Must be difficult to mean anything...sports, academics, fine arts, etc...

Just got back from one of these myself. Didn't like that every kid got something but you can still see the stars shine when they give out the academic achievement awards as well as the sports leadeship awards as well as honor rolls. As I know most of the kids parents it is amazing the correlation of the kids that got something and parents not there, to the kids that actually achieved something and parents in attendance. Let your guy have the day off now and just maybe he won't need the day off 15 years from now to go to his kids court dates. Instead of making fun of it be proud he is raising a child that may not need your mandatory charity they now call taxes. Here's to raising more kids that will take care of themselves through parental involvement.

No issue with an employee doing family items - it is always encouraged in our company. But I do think the idea of an end of year awards ceremony for PRE-K is a bit silly

I also won Most Likely to Succeed in the 8th grade. That one was a gimme, though, since I lived in Louisiana at the time.

Kind of like the "Player of the Game" award after every game. My 1st grader literally told me it doesn't mean anything since they just make sure everyone gets it.

He probably does, too. His wife, on the other hand, probably does not. Hence, he is using PTO to go to this.

When I was in school we also recieved end of school year awards. It was called don't come back for 3 months. And we liked it, yes we did!

Pre-K awards? Good grief.

Back in my day, the only year-end award elementary schools passed out was the ever popular "Don't let the door hit you in the azz on the way out, kid" trophy that we all got on the last day of class.

You guys make me feel guilty about missing my son's middle school, 8th grade awards and farewell yesterday. He was one of 4% that was named to the all A honor roll for the year. He told me no awards were being given out so I went and played in a poker tournament....finished 3rd in a field of 70 and cashed out nicely so there's that.

Son was understanding though because he uses his fake ID about once or twice a month to go to the casino with me. He's becoming one hell of a craps player and his poker skills are coming along nicely.

My bad....didn't mean to be subtle with the brags. My kid is all kinds of awesome!!!! I didn't even mention...will start his first day of high school with a letterman's jacket and is national president of a youth organization which fellow officers are mostly university students. Best of all.....doesn't play video games and spends a couple of hours a day doing chores outside. I let him know every day how much I appreciate him.

You take care of your kids now or you'll be taking care of them later.
The conversations will be uncomfortable, but we all have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable for progress to be made.
