You have a traumatic experience. Psychologist says you should talk about it. Why would I want to do that? Then I have to relive it. Probably better to forget. Or at least put it in the back of my mind and not think about it.

Because your subconscious mind governs like 95% of your actions, thoughts, emotions, etc and having traumatic things locked away in there has a huge impact on you. So you need to work through trauma so that you can resolve it.

The way I "work through" trauma is to not think about it. Not: think about it a lot and try to explain it to someone who wasn't there and/or couldn't understand. How is that helping?

Are you genuinely asking why repressing painful memories is harmful, or are you just trolling?

It's not your fault, OP, lots of people have an older man friend as a child whether that be a priest, a teacher, a neighbor, or a clown that performed at your 8th birthday party,

Because when you don't talk about it with someone you end up asking a message board why you should. This is a cry for help.

Can I talk about my traumatic experience at HEB this evening? And why do certain ethnic groups bring their entire families with them, spread out across the entire aisle, and then stop in front of every single f'n item on your list?

Alcohol seems to solve most of my problems. To hell with this "talking" about it.

I used to think this way until stuff went bad and not talking about what was bothering me/repressing it just made me feel worse and miserable. Hiring a therapist to spend an hour every other week or so till you get over the event or learn to deal with that is a lot better than me hiding from the world.

To each his own, but until you are in a bad place you won't know what you need. It never hurts to try talking to someone.

People tend to think therapy is like what they see on television when it's not. You basically go to learn techniques to manage stress. So that traumatic event OP is talking about is producing stress. It always will. How do you manage that stress? How do you remain "healthy"?

It's like going to any other type of specialist. "Hey, this happened and this and this and this are problems. How do I fix it?"
