Sunscreen didn't exist until 1936 and a lot more people worked outside than they do now. Hats used to actually protect you from the weather instead of being mostly just for style.

Sunscreen? 40+ degrees latitude and you think they were wearing hats to protect their skin from the sun? ...in 1911? I don't have the energy to dig up stats to prove it, but I'd suspect in the days before antibiotics had been discovered, and vaccines for a variety of other stuff that'd kill you quick-like, that skin cancer wasn't all that high on people's list of scary **** they were overly fearful about.

I know in asian cultures, hats were used to keep sun off your skin, not because of skin cancer, but because only lower class people worked outside. So women especially wore hats to keep their complexion of that of someone in a high class.

So to semi agree, yeh I don't think they knew about skin cancer, but it could very well have been done to protect themselves from the sun. Just like those holding umbrellas.

Agnerd, women's hats in this video are clearly fashion pieces.

It's crazy how everybody looks the same, because they all wear the same thing. I wanna know who the first guy in history to walk on the streets in jeans and a tshirt was. Damn near every dude has on the same outfit.

And even with the lack of indoor plumbing and all the horses the city still smelled better than it does today.

Proper gentlemen wearing proper suits. The good ole days before world war and hippies.
