It's not just the recurring charges, but the websites/apps where you store your card, like Amazon.
I broke down and created a .xls of all the places I need to update my card when it gets compromised. Almost 40 places, at this point.
Why update all those places right away when you get a new card unless there is a recurring charge?
You don't have to remember every single site you have a card stored. When the time comes that you are going to make a purchase on some website, that's your reminder that you have a card stored there, and that's when you can update it. There is no need to go and update every single website you have card info stored in proactively. You keep your card on you right? So this isn't a problem to do it when the time comes.
I've gone to purchase something on some website I hadn't used in a while, and I had CC info stored in there from like 2 or 3 cards ago, so updating it every time I got a new card would have clearly been a waste of time.
