Wife works at major trauma hospital no one has been brought in because of a cocker spaniel mauling. Most of the time it is pitbulls. Followed by Rottweiler and Mastiff...etc.

Yep - it takes a few generations to breed the Mike Tyson out of the PBs. Unlike other aggressive breeds (ex. Rottweiler), pit bulls can snap without warning and attack well outside their territory. Good training and safety precautions greatly lowers the risk, but does not eliminate it.

I got a surprising answer from my dad (a vet) when I asked him what breeds he would never own. His list started with a chow and a sharpei. Then he said Irish Setter. I said what about pit bulls? He said for the most part they are really nice dogs and gave the speech about good owners can raise good pit bulls in his opinion. I disagree with him but he is one person I trust when it comes to this and I have no ability to argue with his opinion on the matter.
