I'm somewhat close and thinking about a day trip this weekend, but the reviews are less than stellar. Have any of you people been there, recently?

Ski bunnies for your thoughts

It's actually pretty good if the have snow. Unfortunately that's a HUGE if. It's not somewhere I'd plan a trip because of that reason. However, for a quick day trip it's fine and more than acceptable. Some of the blacks like wild onion and screaming eagle are great. The apache bowl can be awesome too if they have a lot of snow. You're seeing a trend here by now.

We go often. You need to take the reviews with a grain of salt. When they have good snow, which is the case right now, its really a great place to ski. You will read a lot of reviews about the Indians that run the place being rude. I've found that they are actually very nice, in most cases, and have found that those that get any rude treatment are those that are rude to the staff to begin with. For example, lots of Mexicans come over from Mexico since its easy to get there. Its cheap for Mexicans to fly into Juarez from all of the other large cities and make the drive up from El Paso. With them, they bring their attitudes that they are to be served and treated better than everyone else. Along with this, they feel they should be able to cut to the front of the line if they have one family member in line ahead of you. Basically, if you could get rid of all of the Mexicans that come there, it would be a top notch place.

The main issue I have with the place is that its a 12 mile drive from the bottom of the mountain to the top. Its a very windy (winding not wind) road that takes a half hour (if you drive fast like me) to get up to the top. There are shuttles that take you from town. Thats the best way to go if you plan to knock a few back while on top of the mountain. Great little bar up there.

The ski instructors and others that work the mountain are first class. Most of these are not Apaches. But the Apaches do own the place so most of the workers, outside of those on the mountain assisting skiers, are natives. The men are all losing their teeth because they don't have a dental plan. The women are all fat and ugly and smelly.

Lots of really good runs and its also a great place for beginners. Also Ruidoso is an awesome village with lots of good bars and restaurants. Its a really cool place and I love it there.

I'll echo the only go if there's real snow comments. If they have the snow machines out, forget it unless you like icy crap.

Went last spring and ice would have been an upgrade. So slushy in spots that it was like satans hand was reaching up and grabbing your skis.

Place is ****hole, and the workers are rude.

No, I didn't have an attitude.

You couldn't pay me to ski there again.

Santa Fe is better. Taos is better than Santa Fe. Snowmass is amazing, Ajax if you're young. Go there.

You know how I know you're a lying racist ****bag? Because everyone knows Mexicans don't have the money to go on vacation.

If you are in the area, it's not horrible. It certainly won't be the best ski trip of your life, but you can get out and ski.

If you are in that area, maybe look at Cloudcroft as well.

Just have to keep in mind that southern nm skiing can't be compared to northern nm skiing. If you are a fairly advanced skier, you likely won't enjoy southern nm much; but if you are just a recreational type skier, it's not bad.

If he's close to Ruidoso, none of those are likely a day trip, which is what he said he's looking for.

He needs to save up for more than a day trip. I believe someone already said never ever ski apache.

You might as well go the other way and ski Lubbock. __________^____________

And several people said that while it's not the best, it's not horrible.

Someone else suggested colorado before you, and OP stated again that he was only looking for a day trip.

I would agree that going farther north is much better skiing and would recommend that to people. But if they specifically say no that's not what they are looking for, I'm not going to keep insisting.

Its good if there is snow, and that is key. A lot of range of sloops to ski and its got a good set up.

There is the 12 mi drive to the top but Ruidoso is pretty nice little town when you get back from the mountain.

Do not go on a holiday as the aforementioned Mexican's flock there like the salmon of Capistrano

Their 'best' ski days have all turned out to be spring conditions with heavy wet snow.I have been twice and will not go back.

I feel like I could have written these responses, by user, on my own. This is only slightly more helpful than the Google reviews. Sounds like an ass whip, overall. I'm probably just gonna drive around southern New Mexico and scout for public land hunting ops. So thanks, I guess.

As has been stated above, if they have snow it's good for a weekend trip. I wouldn't load up the family and make a big trip out of it like you would in Colorado or elsewhere. It's not a destination and definitely not the place to go at peak times (spring break, Christmas, etc)

A friend and I made a spontaneous weekend trip last February when they had good snow and had a blast.
Lift tickets and hotels are cheap and it's close enough to drive to and take your own gear so it's a good, cheap way to get a few extra ski days in if they have the snow.
