Take the short drive to Quantico and visit the Marine Corps Museum. It is well worth your time.
Or a shorter drive to Arlington and see the sunset parade if it's summer time

Is there anyone is NOT a marine who would recommend the Marine Corps museum?

First you're visiting DC in the wrong time of the year. Go in the dead of winter or early spring because there are not too many tourist there. As many said The Holocaust museum is a must. The National Archives where the Declaration and the Constitution are on display.

WTF? DC during the dead of Winter absolutely sucks. Ignore this advice completely.

There is no non-busy season. Even if you go outside of major tourist season, the museums are always packed with school groups. Schools on the Atlantic seaboard take D.C./Smithsonian trips the way we go to see the Alamo or the state capitol. Not to mention the local schools. Their "local" field trips go to the same places we do.

Hit a couple we hadn't tried before when there last year;
o. American Building Museum was less crowded and pretty good, especially if you like construction. Also a great collection of hustorical building toys and a play area for kids that could entertain them for a couple of hours.
o. Post Office museum near Union Station was also a hidden gem and less crowded.

The Air & Space Museum at Dulles (called the Udvar-Hazy Center) is worth the effort it takes to get there. In fact it's worth renting a car for a day to get to, if you don't already have one.

In addition to the Discovery and a Blackbird, it's got the Enola Gay. THE Enola Frickin' Gay.

Actually, I went in mid-February in 2015 during which it dumped a crapton of snow on us. The museums and the mall were basically empty. Pretty sure I didn't stand in a line once.

if I were taking my adult kids back sometime soon - Air & Space - American History - Holocaust top my list

Arlington is always on our list - changing of the guard at Unknown Soldier - we always take a handful of yellow roses and drop them on a few specific graves - Audie Murphy - JFK - my great uncle from WWI that is buried there - shuttle astronauts - and then I wander around looking for famous names, MOHs or Texans - you should do some looking and find somebody from your family, home town, A&M that you might want to honor with a flower

My wife once went to National Archives and got a special tour (setup by Disney to honor teachers - not sure how hard it would be to replicate) they went through with gloves and were able to handle several famous documents - her guide was LBJ's granddaughter Lucinda Robb

Air and space is a must, American history and natural history are good, Native American was pretty SJW when I went in 05, modern art was meh, regular art was decent.

Lol, only on texags will you find a complaint that a museum in recognition of a culture we desimated is too SJW.

Decimated. My complaint was that instead of presenting individual cultural differences between the many tribes across North America and really fleshing out the way in which those cultures interacted with each other in places like Cahokia, the whole thing focused on the last bit where the government fcked everything up. Not the thousands of years of history before that. I'm a Native American history nerd that wanted more back story, not the short version of what was presented. I guess I should have fleshed that out further. But now I have, so whateves.

American History for sure. Air & Space Annex at Dulles is 10x better than Air & Space on the National Mall. Tour the Prez/War Memorials at night when its cooler & they are lit up - it's much better.

I just got back from DC and he's right. The Native American SUCKED. In fact, of all the things I did, it was the only one that I really didn't like.

The ones I liked: National Archives, American History, Capital tour, memorials, Pentagon (need military escort I believe), and Arlington National.

American History was just OK.
