The Olympic hockey isn't so interesting without the NHL players.

It was an extremely selfish decision by the NHL.
The NHL automatically gave the hockey gold medals to the Russians.

I have to admit that the past 2 olympics featuring NHL players have actually made me a little more interested in hockey.

NHL made a VERY bad decision not to include NHL players. Hope the NBA doesn't follow suit.

While I think the NHL should have taken a break and let the players play just because, I am skeptical how much it really grows the game domestically. I think it was selfish of the NHL but at the same time I don't think it was probably a bad business decision by them. They had 5 cycles of data showing them that the NHL didn't benefit from the arrangement.

The NHL did propose some solutions that I thought were pretty reasonable. For example, letting them show video highlights on its website to promote their own players and try and transfer some of that momentum into NHL viewers and ticket sales. That seems like reasonable compensation for completely altering their schedule and an increased risk of injury to their players to accommodate the Olympics.

I think both the NHL and the IOC are to blame for not getting a deal worked out, but honestly I feel the NHL proposed some perfectly reasonable solutions that the IOC passed on.

The Olympics takes place during the NBA's off season. I don't think there is really any risk of that happening.

If they're not going to agree with the NHL's proposal, then the IOC should not allow any professionals to participate in the tournament from any professional league. make it ALL amateurs.
