Texas A&M Football
Notes from Jackie Sherrill interview
* Back when he first started coaching, he would go over to Jimmy Johnson’s house and listen as Johnson would blare the Aggie War Hymn throughout the whole neighborhood. Johnson has always liked the Aggie band because he grew up in Port Arthur, Texas. Even though he was an All-Southwest Conference player at Arkansas, Johnson always liked the Aggies.
* There is a reason that the people in Las Vegas have the point spread for this weekend’s contest against the Razorbacks the way they do. He has always felt that you have to be really careful when you’re going up against a ‘wounded animal’, and that’s definitely where Arkansas is right now. There is a lot going wrong in Fayetteville, including players calling one another out and John L. Smith’s personal problems going on right now. However, even with all the bad things going on, Arkansas still has a very good quarterback in Tyler Wilson, an excellent receiver in Cobi Hamilton and an outstanding running back in Knile Davis.
* It would be tough for anyone, not just Smith, to lead the Arkansas football team right now. Adding Smith’s personal problems to the pressure of winning on the football field has resulting in nothing but bad things for the Razorbacks. All of the players seem to be operating under the mentality of, ‘Who will be the coach next year?’ which makes it tough to get any sort of consistency going with the current team.
* Whenever you lose the leader of your program, as Arkansas did with Petrino, it can really affect your players. To some of those guys, Petrino was like a father, and to take that away from someone so suddenly can be very detrimental to their performance. The loss of Petrino is also significant from a coaching standpoint, because he was also the offensive play caller for the Razorbacks. There is no question that he had the ability to make adjustments and call plays at a very high level.
* A&M must not take for granted that Arkansas is not a good team if they expect to win on Saturday. The atmosphere of Kyle Field will make a difference in this game and should allow A&M an upper hand to gaining momentum out of the chute. A&M has a much greater chance of winning if they are able to keep Arkansas one dimensional. It’s a guarantee that the Razorback coaches are spending a lot of time this week in trying to figure out how to block Moore and ways to protect their quarterback from the A&M defensive line.
* The pride that some of these guys play with, Dustin Harris especially, has really impressed him through three games this season. The young players have also been impressive so far and it’s obvious that they want to win and will do whatever they can to get the results they desire. This team improves every week and gets better game after game which is always something you want to see from your players.
