Last week, No. 14 Texas A&M women's golf placed third at the Chevron Collegiate in Humble, and they'll head to Arizona in a couple of weeks for the Mountain View Collegiate. On Tuesday morning, Gerrod Chadwell spoke to TexAgs Radio about the latest regarding his program.

Key notes from Gerrod Chadwell interview

  • Kelvin Sampson is one of my guys. At Oklahoma, when I was there before Houston, he might even have told you that the NBA changed him. At Houston, he was the same way Mike Elko is here: For everybody. He's a total team player. He's a golfer. I know that game for him the other night was tough for him. To see Houston pull it out, I sent him a text, and he sent Stacy and me a nice text back. I'm rooting for him.

  • Sampson dug that Houston basketball program out of the dirt, and I can remember the days he was going around campus with a bullhorn to get people to games. I root for him because he is a total team player and what he meant for Stacy and me during our time there.

  • Going back to Houston last week, it was good to see the progress there and to see a lot of old friends. Our young ladies played very well. It was good to see some of the things that happened.

  • The first day was 80-something degrees, and the course was in the best shape I've ever seen it in. The greens were fast. The day we had was a testament to our performance team to get our girls ready to go. Our sports performance team is the best collective group I've been around in all my years of coaching. That 36-hole day is a gut test. We just didn't play as well on the second day to win the tournament.

  • It's hard because you're disappointed in the moment and trying to point out things to the young ladies to get better, but we were better than the time before. That was a tournament we should have won, but you have to find the fine line of criticism and encouragement. SMU is a good team, and you can't spot them that much cushion and expect to win.

  • Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio played well. I think that was encouraging to finally see her get a 54-hole tournament under her belt. She's only a freshman. We had a good moment when we got back. She got a lot off her chest with carrying her own expectations around, which is very hard for her. Trying to be the No. 2 amateur in the world every day is very, very hard. I think she gave herself some grace, so I'm excited for her.

  • Adela Cernousek had the overnight lead and didn't play well on the second day. The putter let her down. When we pulled in after driving back, everybody had gone home, but she putted for an hour and a half. That's one of the things that makes her great. She had to get it out of her system before she went home. I don't worry about her. That's just her. That's the way Stacy was when she was at Arkansas. Stacy didn't handle losing well, and that's what she had to do to be able to sleep. It was a cool moment to have with Adela on the putting green.

  • For somebody who hasn't played up to her standard this spring, for Zoe Slaughter to get back in the lineup was cool. Everybody thought that was the right moment. Everybody had a vote of confidence for Zoe. She played really, really well for 54 holes, so I'm excited to see the old Zoe again.

  • It's crazy that spring break is already here. We'll be home for two weeks, which we haven't had since we started the season. We'll leave next Tuesday for Tucson. We'll get to play Grayhawk, where the national tournament has been, to get some good vibes going before we head down to Tucson. Hopefully, we can pick up where we left off in Houston.

  • The Bryan Regional is May 6-8. Aggies, we need y'all to come out. I know we could use some volunteers. The golf course is starting to get in shape. I would love for everybody to be out there to support the young ladies. It's a big thing. It's what we have to do to be in the top-five of the regional to make the national championship.

  • I have to get rid of this dad bod somehow. Riding the bike is my therapy. Playing basketball would be the best way I could go however many miles I needed to go. I don't just want to run. I have to have something in front of me to be able to run. We should start an Average Joe's men's league.
