Jaylen Henderson describes 'good vibe' surrounding A&M's program

After suffering an injury in the Texas Bowl, A&M quarterback Jaylen Henderson's recovery is currently ahead of schedule as he plans to be back for spring practice. Joining TexAgs Radio on Thursday, Henderson discussed his injury, his appreciation for Aggieland and more.

Key notes from Jaylen Henderson interview

  • My recovery is going well. I’m ahead of schedule right now. I’m three weeks post-surgery, and everything is going well. I’m just looking forward to rehab now.

  • I had never gotten hurt like that before, so I didn’t know if it was a break or a dislocation. It was very uncomfortable for the first few days. I couldn’t sleep, but it’s getting better every day. I can throw a little bit now. My strength is coming back. I’m getting better every day.

  • I’m blessed it wasn’t my neck, back or knee that got hurt. I was upset and pissed off. I had prepared for three weeks for the bowl game. I’m working hard to come back with my guys, and at least it’s not something crazy where I’ll miss next year. It’s a 6-8 week recovery. I’ll be back for spring ball for sure.

  • On the field, they told me it was broken. They knew it right away. I told them I knew there was a special shot somewhere to let me come back into the game, but obviously, that wasn’t happening.

  • It has been a great transition with the coaching staff, and it’s exactly what we needed for the program. In the first week of training, you can tell it’s going to be a championship game. I’m excited for the spring.

  • I feel like the offense is tailor-made for me with what Collin Klein did with Will Howard at Kansas State. I think I can thrive in this offense.

  • Tommy Moffitt and his staff have done a great job of having structure. If you miss something, you have to be held accountable and move on. That’s how we want to be treated as grown men, and that’s how it’s going to be in real life.

  • It feels different. There is a lot of competition, but there is also a lot of joy and love to be here right now. It’s a good vibe going on.

  • I was proud of Marcel Reed. I told him I was proud of him after the game. He did a good job and stepped up. He did what he had to do.

  • We’ve got Tre Watson and a lot of other guys from the transfer port. It definitely helps. Every time I refresh on Twitter, it’s like we got another guy. It’s certainly exciting.

  • Watson is a versatile tight end. He can block and catch. He runs great routes. He’s a great kid from a great family that is really going to embrace Aggieland.

  • It was already crazy because you never have the same team from one year to the next. Now, with the portal and NIL, whenever a coach leaves, he’s going to take like half of his team with him.

  • Kalen DeBoer is a good coach. I was lucky that he brought me in at Fresno State. I have nothing but good things to say about him and his family. I wasn’t really rooting for him and Washington or Michigan in the national title game. I was just happy that Texas didn’t win it.

  • Moffitt came in with a lot of energy. He’s tough on us, but that’s what we need. Right now, we all love him and enjoy him. We all want to put the work in.

  • I’m interested to throw against these secondary transfers. There is a lot of competition in the secondary. There is competition everywhere. We have a lot of guys in the secondary. It should be fun. They all look like good players. The freshmen have experience now too. It should be fun competing against everybody.

  • Aggieland embraced my family. We love relationships. The new coaching staff embraced us. I am excited about what the coaches are preaching. Offensively, I feel like Klein can help us achieve a championship, and that’s our goal coming into this year.

  • I feel like we have the best quarterback room in the country. We have a lot of guys that stepped up and played when we had to. I’m never going to run from competition. I’m going to compete and make myself and those around me better.

  • I’m a Ravens fan. Before anybody called me a bandwagon fan, I’ve been a fan since I was eight years old and those teams with Ray Rice, Ray Lewis, and Joe Flacco. I’ve got the Ravens winning the whole thing. I hope they don’t disappoint. C.J. Stroud has been balling, and he’s from California. Shout out to my guy.

  • I love to play Madden and 2K. I love to hang out with friends and family. I like to hoop, so when I get my arm right, I’m ready to shoot it around a little bit. Bryce Anderson and Reed can hoop. I play a shooting guard spot. I can hit 3-pointers. Any lefty like me has to be able to shoot.

  • Having Ainias Smith around is leadership. As a player of a coach, his energy is awesome to be around. I wish him the best on draft night. I love him and his family. I wish he was playing in that bowl game, but I understand what happened once he got hurt and the NFL Draft coming up. Him choosing to still be around was special.

  • It’s definitely a blessing. I went to the grocery store with Watson recently, and everybody was like, “Hey, Jaylen.” The fans know who you are. I want to bring a championship for the fans. They’re awesome.

I REALLY like Jaylen Henderson, and 10000% believe we beat Okie State with him at QB.

Half-way through 2Q vs. State I was thinking he probably should have been the QB when Conner went down. But State is absolutely terrible, so I just thought we had a very good QB depth player. My eyes did pop on the zone-read play-action quick slant TD pass..... that was next level and the accuracy and velocity looked like the best QB in the country, an NFL throw.

Then in the game vs. swamp kitties in Red Stick....... that pretty much solidified in my mind Jaylen should have been QB2 (aka starting QB1 after Auburn) all season.

Jaylen seems like a great kid, a true student-athlete CFB player, and he loves A&M. You can build a winning team around a guy like this.

Open QB competition in the spring and fall, we are going to have a very good QB1 and a great QB2. Heck even Reed I think can grow and be impressive.

PS - no disrespect to Max Johnson who was and is a warrior, just with limitations.

I agree, it seemed pretty dang clear to me that Henderson should have been QB2 all season. I still think CW is one of the best QBs we've had on campus in a LONG time, but I'm excited about the QB room as a whole. Overall, we are in a great spot.

Agree Jaylen shouldve taken over after CW injury. A very good QB. Reed was also phenomenal given the circumstances he was put in.

Agree with JH- we may have the best QB room in the country- 3 guys I wouldnt mind going with for a whole season if they had the prep time.

I like Jaylen too, but Reed had a great game. QB play was not the reason we lost to OSU.

He said in the interview that his recovery time is 6-8 weeks from his surgery which was 3(?) weeks ago.
He said he hoped to be or would be ready to go for spring practice.

Is he pickin' up good vibrations and giving him the excitations, or is it such a good vibration and a sweet sensation?

I pick on good vibes on this QB. Unfortunately, the odds are high (God forbid) that a second string QB will take the field in 2024 at some point.

Both statements are true- Reed played a great game, and we did not lose "because" of him. But you are kidding yourself if you don't think Jaylen would have made enough of a difference to win that game.

The experience he gained with the team in the last 6 weeks was invaluable and absolutely would have made a difference, even though we were playing with our 2nd and 3rd team defense. Or more correctly, BECAUSE we were playing with our 2nd and 3rd team defense.

Was he going to play DB?
We'll win this war, but we'll win it only by fighting and by showing the Germans that we've got more guts than they have, or ever will have. We're not going to just shoot the sons-of-b******, were going to rip out their living G*******d guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy Hun c********** by the bushel-f****** basket. War is a bloody killing business. You've got to spill their blood or they will spill yours. Rip them up the belly. Shot them in the guts.

REALLY like this kid, and he hasn't scratched the surface of what he can accomplish. Massive props to Petrino for talking Jimbo into adding Jaylen through the portal.
