Guerrieri & Co. cap off four-match homestand with Tulsa on Thursday

G Guerrieri & Co. have kicked off their 2023 season, unfortunately slumping to 0-2-1. The Texas A&M head soccer coach joined TexAgs Radio to detail the start of the season and preview Thursday's match with Tulsa as the Aggies wrap up a four-game homestand.

Key notes from G Guerrieri interview

  • It's been neat having you over there as a color commentator this season, David. You are a soccer dad. Getting you on the inside of the program or on the broadcast is kind of cool.

  • We’ve been close. That is the frustrating part for myself and for the payers. They know they can play with and beat these teams. They just haven't done it. I schedule hard games because I think we can beat these teams. Other teams around the country are building up their egos with lopsided wins. We are building our confidence because we know we can be anybody.

  • Washington State won 3-2 with a couple of gifts from us. Florida State is the No. 2 team in the country, partly because they beat us 2-1 in the final few minutes. Baylor got out of here with a 1-1 draw. Props to them because they thwarted a number of chances.

  • The SEC is a challenging league. We had a great conversation yesterday about the fact that we’re good enough but need to be more consistent.

  • Tomorrow, we play Tulsa. I think we are ready to make that big step and then we can get a big run.

  • Shot selection is something we can be better with. Against Baylor, our average distance was 18.1 yards. We want to get closer. We want into to be at three yards. We hit a lot of Baylor players because they had so many people inside of the box.

  • One of our strikers against Washinton State and in Baylor had a shot from five yards that didn't go in. If those goals go in, it's a different start to the season.

  • Maile Hayes is most dangerous when she is facing goal. We were trying to find ways to pull her back. In the last 30 minutes of Baylor, we were able to put her up as a true nine.

  • Tulsa is my alma mater, and it's known as TU. My wife said I needed to become a “Tulsa graduate” and not a “TU graduate” when we moved down here. You can say BTHO TU on Thursday night, and it will be taken the right way. They came into the season with high hopes. I respect them a lot, but we need to beat them.
