Key notes from Sam Torn interview

  • What we try to do is create the finest game day atmosphere in America. We know for sure that the thing that makes the best game day atmosphere is winning, and we will with Jimbo Fisher. We may not win a National Championship this year, but we will win and Kyle Field is going to be awesome.

  • As far as what we are doing at Kyle Field, I want to make sure you listeners here at TexAgs understand exactly why we are doing this. The fact of the matter is in college football there is a declining attendance, while Texas A&M is more insulated, we are not immune to it. As generational change occurs, it is very important that the experience be relevant, so we are able to keep attracting a great people. We studied eleven different areas, with over 150 people. Last year we implemented a few things in-game, and surveyed a wide array of fans after the season and had a tremendous response. Including a tremendous response from our young people and our students.

  • We have a younger generation of fans, our game day experience is driven by fans. We have a minimum of 31,000 student fans at Kyle Field. The atmosphere is driven by students. We put in a music operator that is a subtle word for a DJ. That was very well received by students, younger fans, by football players, and by recruits. Not as well received by older fans. We will continue with the music operator job. His role is to never step on the band to never step on the yell leaders, but fill in where needed.

  • Jimbo Fisher has a few things that are important to him. As you know Jimbo has bought fully into Aggieland, so the 12th Man is very important to Jimbo. So on the team entrance he wants the 12th Man to be more emphasized, so we have a huge flag that either Cullen Gillaspia, or someone else will be running out with. He wants to emphasize that the first five minutes of the second half has to be high energy coming out at halftime that is very important to him. The fourth quarter is also very important to Jimbo, so we have been working with 12th Man Productions and the football team on creating something special going into the fourth quarter. You will see all of these things in terms of our game day presentations.

  • In addition, we have added two new tailgate towers. We have added a Pepsi market on the southeast activation tower with a large variety of concessions and we are working with Levy. Our deputy director of athletics has made it her mission to work with Levy. Under her direction they have restructured their staff, reorganized how they do things and they have added some things. I can tell you a lot work has been done. We also thought we could do better in out fan zone. There will be live music every game, a huge kids area with inflatables, and eleven different food trucks, local vendors right out there in the fan zone for folks.

  • We are going to use the Hall of Champions in a much more interactive way. One thing we are doing this year is we are opening Reed Arena and Blue Bell Park so that fans that need to get out of the heat and use a nice clean restroom can use those two facilities.

  • Our two goals were to make the most intimidating environment possible so we can win, and secondly to provide a superior fan experience so that fans will come to the games and see what we have for them.

  • We already have the best experience there is in college football. It is important to keep things that are iconic and unique to Texas A&M. We are not messing with anything. The five top things from the survey were Aggie traditions in the stadium, being part of the 12th Man, and we will continue to make sure we do that.

  • We will be moving to digital ticketing and digital parking, that won’t happen this year but in the future. It’s a digital world and we are trying to touch every area. Menu options is another big one, so many are gluten-free so we are going to continue to expand our options in that area as well.

  • We will still be doing the “That’s a fighting Texas Aggie First Down” and the reason why is because when we surveyed we found out that the students liked it, and the football players liked it. The football players really like it because it recognizes offensive success but mainly because it really bugs the opposing defense. There even has been moments where the opposing team has turned around and made obscene gestures at Aggie fans after we do that. We understand that it is controversial but we are keeping it because the students and football players like it. We consulted with the yell leaders, and they felt like it was the right thing to do. It really was more their call.

  • All of this is because we have great cooperation between the university, the athletic department, and the twelfth man foundation. The understanding of the twelfth man all of our fans and keeping what you need push we will keep pushing the envelope because people change and times change.

I was 100% on board with him until he tried to slide the comment in about the "Fightin Texas Aggie First Down". I agree with the announcer saying it and the crowd Whooping. That sounded great! But if anyone from the opposing team turned around when it was done last year, they were probably looking around saying, "What the h*ll did they just say? Did anyone catch that? Were they making fun of my momma or what?" If the announcer will say the words "first down" then we can live with it. But if he says, "And that's another Fightin Texas Aggie..." and stops, it just sounds so stupid. Especially when half of the students are on their phones taking selfies and not paying attention anyway.
On that note, to make decisions simply because "the students like it" doesn't make a lot of sense. He mentioned there are 31K students in Kyle each week. Well...that means there are 69K+ non-students, most of whom are paying far more than the students, including the 12th Man Fees, to be there. I would say THESE are the people you need to be focusing on pleasing. Follow the money boys...follow the money. Keep Momma Happy!

I love the Fight'en Aggie First Down!!! You need to fix some speakers where the students can hear the band. Great job Gabe and Mr Torn!

The First Down thing is so awkward because it's half announcer and half crowd. Makes me feel like a trained seal. Forget the announcer and just let the 12th man do a new yell "Fightin'. Texas. Aggie. First. Down."

The students are important, but I'm not happy that the rest of us paying for tickets and potentially driving long distances to attend seem to not matter. I'd have to see some data but I'm guessing attendance of everyone but the students is what is most in decline.

"Fightin' Texas Aggie....................." Is awkward as hell and you won't catch me participating. I feel like I'm at some other school when that happens.

Where to start? Sounds like Sam is blowing with the wind of fads and gimmicks. Need some better leadership.

Serious question Mr. Torn: why isnt the Spirit of Aggieland timed closer to kickoff? This unifies ALL Ags at the game and gets us in gear intimidation-wise right at the start. Bring it back! Jimbo will love it! Our players will love it! WE ALL WILL LOVE IT!

I just pray they have fixed the CF at the NW tower entrance west side.

And you will never convince me the "First Down" yell thing is popular or cool. An unscientific survey on TexAgs and various other Aggie sites would reveal 95% hate it 4% are indifferent and 1% have no opinion or like it.

The first down crap is Cougar Highesque, but if the players and students want it, then so be it.

One would think the people who pay the money for this crap would be the ones who have their opinions taken into account. Guess thats not the case here.

This sounds like an old guy trying to be hip. It doesnt work. The only thing worse than new army is old army trying to guess what the youngins might like. It will not turn out like you think sam.

Stick to what made us great. Keep it simple. A dj in the stands wont help reverse nationwide attendance trends. Its much deeper than that.

Further, i see no need to attend any games with all the fluff. Its just annoying noise. Im happy to watch games at the house or a bar. The dj isnt heard on the tv.

Been waiting so long

And, so, just keep doing the stuff that pisses off those that PAY the bills. Good thinking there. Exactly why I let my long time season tickets lapse. I know, "Well, bye.", and all that.

But, letting my tickets go really wasn't my idea. My 20 something son, class of 14, was the one that first suggested it. He had been going since he was about 9. Wore t u crap (his mom) until he saw Kyle Field for the first time (Bonfire game). He never looked back after that day. Hard core. When he says it just isn't fun any more - well someone (Sam) ought to listen to that young person.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

DJ is so annoying. It's a football game, for crying out loud. The Task Force created a camel while trying to create a thoroughbred. I referred to the inside the stadium garbage. None of what he said surprised me. "The most unique and intimidating stadium in all if college football." Unique? Lol. Does Sam Torn really believe that?

The fact that we have a task force comprised of non-athletic department representatives, telling the highly paid athletic department representatives how to manage the game day experience has always come off to me as very odd, and unnecessary.

That combined with the belief that this group has been "at it" for several years now just baffles me.

This $?!+ isn't rocket science.....

I like this idea of the yell leaders taking charge. Would be interesting to see them run with that and see where it goes.

Torn doesn't get it. Students will always attend games, especially if we are winning at home as we should be. He should be focused on securing more season ticket holders from former students. By changing the entire gameday experience as we know it with gimmicks, this will not help but hurt adding more ticket holders in this category. These antics are what other basic fan bases are accustomed to, not Texas A&M. Get it together "Gameday Experience Team". Our team has been disappointing the last 18 years, as mentioned in the recent Texags "internet video", not the gameday experience. WAKE UP!!!

It ain't gonna be like it used to be*

*except the game day experience.

I make it down for 1 game a year and am amazed at how they've killed the spirit of old Kyke. Literally went away as the press box fell for new Kyle. Triangulating surveys, cheap water, obnoxious noise distractions, DJs, food trucks aren't going to bring that back. Ever.

Opinions differ. Season ticket holder since 1997 here. Atmosphere gets better every year, IMO. Winning West division games is what has been missing. Beat LSU or Bama at home and 2010 NU game will seem tame in retrospect. Aggieland shouldn't be Colonial Williamsburg. Some of my fellow olds sound like Cubs fans still upset at night games.

So that's what the face of stupidity looks like

I am not setting foot again in Kyle field

What they have done is pure bull *****!

You have ruin the experience at Kyle field ten fold with your stupid "research group"!!

One more thing: Torn states that college football attendance has dropped off. Could it in part be the increase in so many in-stadium annoyances that detract from gameday experience? It's a football game, for crying out loud!
