Aggie Volleyball's Laurie Corbelli talks about maturity, SEC play
On loss against Alabama...
"Well, we gave the match
away. Nothing against Alabama, they did a really nice job at home on
making sure they found a way to win but we helped them a lot. We did not
have a good start but we had a good comeback in sets 3 and 4. Set 5 was
hard to watch to be honest. We had a great plan and the team had some
success but the minute we had a couple errors in a row unforced we kind
of deflated and it effected the outcome. They were pretty upset and
everyone was taking that one hard."
On Junior settle Stephanie Aiple...
"She's
just incredibly consistent and a really intense player who is always
ready both in practice and matches. We've really had a setter that has
been able to do more than she has been doing and we are starting to be
able to assist that with our first ball that comes to our side. Our
serve receive has been less than what it needed to be in the past
consistently. When this team decides to put their first touch and their
serve receive, and their free ball pass, down ball passes, digs,
whatever you wanna call them up near the setter target then Steph can
really do her thing. She's a 6'1 setter which is really hard to find.
She is really athletic, really hard to find with her volleyball
knowledge. When we can do that and open up our other hitters with
disrupting our opponents defense because she might attack, it's just a
whole different game for us. When she took the challenge to be very very
active, I give her little goals for set for how many times I want her
to, even if it's not a kill, to make the attempt, to disrupt their
defense in any way that she can is going to be effective. She is doing
that now and it's a whole new look for Aggie Volleyball."
On importance of momentum going forward in SEC play...
"It
was huge. We played well and not only did we get the win but we won
doing what we do. I think we lost a little bit of our identity after the
loss to Alabama. That didn't feel like us at the end there especially
so I think we were all working really hard in the practice that we
returned to on Saturday
to get that back and they worked so hard. They were here ready to go,
playing triples, and even though they were down they have the short
memory and decided they had to move forward and it worked for them. It
was really great to see as a coach that they had that kind of maturity
to take it and make the next practice a great practice. I credit the
players for that. They really had the right attitudes and were ready and
willing to listen to a couple of changes we made just to ensure we got
what we wanted on Sunday against Auburn."
On focus this week in practice...
"You
know I think the three things we identified with this week and probably
next week to have success is one, serving more aggressively which I
thought we did against Auburn. We have got to put more pace on our
serving. We are often just a little too hesitant because we don't want
to miss. We are locating our targets well but it's not with enough pace.
We are also really working on our blocking. Blocking is so critical at
this level when teams are in system and you can slow down their top
hitters. Even if you can't stop them but you can slow them down you have
a lot of opportunities. I think the team just realizes when they gave
away that 5th set or they just did not do what they wanted in the 5th
set at Alabama it really inspired them to never let that happen again so
we are working on our mental toughness honestly. We are working on
being more consistent, we are working on making sure that if we are
expected to put this ball in this target, no matter what comes at me I'm
doing it and just that whole shift at the way they look at the way they
execute each and every point is starting to sink in and how important
that is."
