Key quotes from Sedrick Curry interview

“First, back in ’97 when I played in the Cotton Bowl, that was a great game to play in and a true Texas classic, playing in front of all of your friends and family in a bowl game.  Although we didn’t come out victorious that day, reminiscing about playing in the Cotton Bowl was so much fun and then fast forward years later with UCLA coming into Kyle Field with UCLA with Josh Rosen, who is a great quarterback.  It was very good to see the Aggies come out with a victory.  Those guys played very hard and the defense played phenomenal, despite a few late touchdowns in the fourth quarter.  They held it together and came back, and I have seen signs during that game of great things to come throughout the season.”

“I was impressed with the cornerbacks because of the big shoes that they have to fill out there.  I was checking out the guys last year and they made NFL teams.  I was happy to see that the corners this year held their own, were aggressive, and kept the receivers in check pretty much the whole game.  There was the one long pass but overall they did an excellent job.  They are going to keep getting better every game.”

“It takes a few weeks to find a comfort level as a new starter.  Those guys at corner have been preparing for these situations, and although they have not had as much experience, they are game ready and have been practicing.  They have a lack of game experience but the more times they get out there and line up against opponents, they will keep getting better.  With those two defensive ends in Hall and Garrett rushing on the outside, that makes your life much easier as a cornerback.”

“I don’t think Josh Rosen was prepared for the atmosphere in Kyle Field.  He played a good game overall, but he left some stuff on the table that he could have done better.  I credit the 12th Man, we kept it loud and noisy and let them know that Kyle Field is a loud place.”

“It is very beneficial for the defensive backs to practice against their own receivers.  You think about it, our skill positions with Speedy, Christian Kirk, Ricky Seals-Jones, and Josh Reynolds are remarkable. Those are some elite receivers.  If you are battling with those guys everyday you are going up against arguably the best receiving corps in the country with their talent and depth.  They have no option but to get better.”

“Trevor Knight looked good.  There were a few plays that left some room for improvement, but it was the first game and he managed it well.  I think he showed great leadership.  I liked when he walked over to the huddle in overtime and got the offensive line together.  He showed great command of the offense.  I felt like he was in control the whole game and didn’t seem flustered.  It didn’t seem like the game was too much for him and he seemed very mature and I am looking forward to him getting better also.  It is like the first game working out the kinks still, but he was very encouraging to watch.”

“I am very encouraged by John Chavis.  From the very moment he got hired, I was excited and thought of how impressive he would be.  To see now the game this past Saturday, I can tell that he is putting his fingerprints on this defense already. UCLA got down a few times early and they held them to field goals and that is a credit to the defense and the work Chavis has done.”

“When I was playing at A&M, I knew it was a special atmosphere when I decided to sign with A&M and come to graduate and pursue football there.  Now that I have moved on and now live in Houston with my wife, who is also an Aggie, we come back to see teammates and friends and we have a huge tailgate every game at Reed Arena.  We bring our kids and let them run around Kyle Field, and it is truly amazing.  It is an amazing place and it makes me that much more excited about the decision I made back in 1995 to come to school at Texas A&M.”

“Right now Texas A&M has to be sure and focus on their technique and not get lazy.  They need to make sure they run the plays and tackle properly and do the little things right.  Now, Prairie View is not quite the opponent that UCLA was.  You are expected to win the game and perform well.  Be consistent, play your coverages, run your routes, tackle properly, and make sure you do everything fundamentally sound.  You don’t want to set any bad habits for next week.”
