Texas A&M's 50 greatest football victories: Nos. 50-46

There have been nail-biters and blowouts. There have been amazing comebacks and improbable upsets. There have been last-minute touchdowns and clutch goal line stands.

Through 121 seasons of Texas A&M football, the Aggies have posted 717 victories.

One resulted in cotton falling like snow at Kyle Field. Another had a historic “Bear” hug. Several came at the expense of Heisman Trophy recipients.

Some transformed star players like Crow, Hargett, Johnny Football and the Haskell Hurricane into legends.

From the Dixie Classic, to the Sugar Bowl, to — oh, my gracious — a stunning triumph at Tuscaloosa, TexAgs has attempted to rank the Aggies’ 50 greatest football victories to be revealed in sets of five.

See if your Top 50 matches ours.

50. Texas A&M 19, TCU 16 (Oct. 15, 1955): Don Watson ran for two touchdowns and the A&M defense held Jim Swink to 85 yards to upset the No. 7 Horned Frogs in Fort Worth.

It was an impressive win for the Aggies, who rebounded from a 1-9 finish in ’54 to finish 7-2-1 in their second season under coach Paul Bryant.

The Aggies finished 4-1-1 in the Southwest Conference to place second to only TCU. TCU’s only other loss was 14-13 to Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl.

49. Texas A&M 12, Texas 7 (Nov. 24, 2006): The 2006 season was painfully close to being a great one for the Aggies. Heading into the regular season finale they were 8-3 with all three losses coming by a combined six points. In fact, the Aggies were trying to bounce back from consecutive one-point losses to Oklahoma and Nebraska.

Meanwhile, No. 11 Texas, which had posted six straight wins over the Aggies, needed a victory to clinch the Big 12 South Division.

The A&M defense halted two Texas scoring threats in the first half. Linebacker Mark Dodge stopped Texas’ Henry Melton for no gain on fourth-and-one at the A&M eight-yard line. Later, Melvin Bullitt intercepted a Colt McCoy pass in the end zone with less than four minutes remaining in the second half.

The Aggies held a 6-0 halftime lead on the strength of a 41-yard Mike Goodson touchdown run.

Texas went ahead 7-6 late in the third quarter on a Jamaal Charles touchdown run.

However, the Aggies regained the lead on Stephen McGee’s eight-yard touchdown run, which capped an 88-yard, 16-play drive with just 2:32 remaining.

Dodge and Japhus Brown snatched interceptions to deny Texas any chance of a comeback.

48. Texas A&M 41, Ole Miss 38 (Oct. 12, 2013): A hostile crowd at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium was anticipating an upset when Ole Miss took a 31-24 lead on Bo Wallace’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Laquon Treadwell with 10:36 remaining in the game.

However, the ninth-ranked Aggies rallied behind a series of clutch plays by quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Manziel completed passes of 27 yards to Derel Walker and 19 yards to Malcome Kennedy on a drive for a Trey Williams 9-yard touchdown run. Later, he scrambled for a 13-yard gain on fourth-and-seven and hit Mike Evans for a 26-yard gain to set up Manziel’s 6-yard touchdown run that forged a 38-38 tie with 3:07 remaining.

After the A&M defense forced a punt on Ole Miss’ ensuing possession, Manziel led the Aggies on a seven-play, 56-yard drive for Josh Lambo’s game-winning 33-yard field goal on the last play.

47. Texas A&M 34, Baylor 12 (Oct. 19, 1991): The second-largest crowd in the history of Floyd Casey Stadium turned out and an ABC regional audience tuned in to see the No. 19 Aggies and No. 16 Bears clash in a key Southwest Conference game.

They witnessed a blowout.

Bucky Richardson ran for two touchdowns and Doug Carter scored another in the second quarter as the Aggies raced to a 27-0 halftime lead. A Terry Venetoulias 41-yard field goal and Greg Hill 2-yard touchdown run settled the issue in the third quarter.

Baylor managed two meaningless touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but the domination was obvious. BU, which entered the game leading the SWC in total offense, managed only 243 yards against the Wrecking Crew. {"Module":"quote","Alignment":"right","Quote":"Baylor managed two meaningless touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but the domination was obvious. Marcus Buckley posted two sacks and Sam Adams got an interception.

46. Texas A&M 22, Michigan 20 (Dec. 29, 1995): The Alamo Bowl matched a pair of teams which had been ranked in the top 10 in early October but suffered close losses on the same day.

The 19th-ranked Aggies (8-3) had a chance to salvage a disappointing season with a victory over Michigan, a traditional powerhouse which had destroyed A&M 41-3 in a previous clash 18 years before.

A&M made it quite clear from the outset there would be no repeat for the 14th-ranked Wolverines, who completed the regular season with a 31-23 victory over No. 2 Ohio State.

Although Michigan quarterback Brian Griese connected with Amani Toomer twice for touchdown passes, he completed only nine of 23 passes for 182 yards against the A&M defense.

Meanwhile, Eric Bernard rushed nine yards for a touchdown and Kyle Bryant kicked five field goals — two in the fourth quarter — to lift the Aggies to victory.

Loved that game. All the talk before hand was about J.J. Joe and Melvin Bonner. How hard they were to stop. Crushed. A total ass whipping from the start on the road. Glad to see it on the list.
