Aggies enter Associated Press basketball poll at No. 25

The Battle 4 Atlantis early-season tournament, which tips off on Wednesday, will feature three ranked teams among its eight contestants.

Texas A&M is officially one of them.

In the newest iteration of the Associated Press men's basketball poll, released Monday, the 4-0 Aggies broke into the rankings at No. 25. Gonzaga and Connecticut, Nos. 10 and 18, respectively, will also be Battle 4 Atlantis participants — with the Zags a potential second-round opponent should A&M knock off unranked Texas in its first game.

In their most recent college basketball podcast, ESPN analysts Seth Greenberg and Andy Katz predicted the Aggies to win the Battle 4 Atlantis.

"I really like Texas A&M. This is a very complete basketball team," Greenberg said. "Tyler Davis gives them a legitimate threat in the post. Will be interesting watching him against a guy like Texas' Cameron Ridley. A&M is a team that has tremendous depth, has a good mixture between youth and experience, Danuel House is a guy who scores it and scores it easy. I just think this is Texas A&M's breakthrough year. ... Texas A&M, to me, is one of the sleeper teams in college basketball.

"In the end, I think Texas A&M is going to find a way to win this tournament and make a huge statement for the SEC. They have too much athleticism, too much depth. I know it is a little bit out of the box, but the statement that I'm trying to make is Texas A&M is a legit top-25 team. They have all the pieces."

The release of this week's rankings also marks the first instance the Aggies have appeared in the national rankings since Dec. 12, 2011. The Ags join No. 1 Kentucky, No. 19 Vanderbilt and 22 LSU to make up the four SEC teams in the current rankings.

A&M won its first four contests of the 2015 season by an average margin of 33.8 points per game, backing up preseason hype that centered around its returning core of upperclassmen and elite incoming freshmen. Now, the competition will ramp up as the Aggies enter the first real portion of a challenging non-conference slate.

Texas A&M vs. Texas in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis will tip off at 6:00 pm on Wednesday.
