Key quotes from Spencer Nealy interview (24:00 mark of the file)

“On a scale of 1-10, in terms of how much I remember our fundraiser dinner at the Republic, I’m going to throw a number out there that might surprise you. I’m going with a 7.5. I remember a lot of the night, actually. It was probably one of the coolest experiences of my life when they say, ‘It’s all free.’ I was like, ‘I will take the ribeye, medium rare. Add two extra ounces, because you know, put it on my tab.’ But the whiskey was flowing like crazy! That was good whiskey we had. I had to eat my steak fast, because I’m all about time management. You’ve got to remember, my grandfather thought I was too skinny, so I was raised around full sirloins all the time. Needless to say, I visited him a lot. He still tries to fatten me up, because I think he is waiting for the replacements after an NFL strike. I’m coming back.”

“Where that night truly got dark was when we went to Chimy’s. I can handle whiskey, but when I go south of the border and my vatos come into my stomach and start causing mayhem with the country boys that are already in there ... the tequila shots were flowing. Republic is a cool place though. That was my first time, so (Chris) and I shared a special moment.”

“I feel like Roy May is more of a Dapper Dan. We sat across from each other, so I feel like I got to know you pretty well. But you’re talking to a guy that doesn't know very much about that kind of stuff. I just rub a bunch of Old Spice on me and then my musk just kind of becomes the natural aroma. My Old Spice ad would be, ‘You want a real man? All this other stuff is fake, nobody looks like that. This is sex appeal right here. I’m a buffet connoisseur, avid light beer drinker, unless the dark beer is on special. I haven't gotten to the point where I venture there yet.’ That is my Old Spice commercial right there.”

“It must have been my picture with my main dude Kyle Allen, because he came out 6-6, red hot with a touchdown. He is rocking and rolling. I'm so proud of him and he did so good. I don’t think Sumlin starts him, because everybody thinks that because Kyler Murray’s dad was awesome, that he is going to be awesome. If that’s how it worked, I would be in the NBA right now. The way our offense is set, Kyle Allen gives us the best chance to win because he can throw the ball. Poor Kyler thinks he is Johnny Manziel and I hate to break it to Kansas State people’s hearts, but I could have never surpassed my dad. I would have never surpassed the basketball mantra.”

“I think you have to individualize Kyler and let him go out and play. He may act confident, but deep down he has to think, ‘Man, I’m playing at my dads alma mater.’ That is stressful, on anybody. Kyle Allen is smooth as butter. When I talked to him, of course when I talked to him I was pretty much Republic drunk, but I was like, ‘Dude!’ and as an ex-player, I don’t hold anything back, because nobody held anything back with me. So I was like, ‘What the heck has been going on?!’ And he said, ‘I don't know, I’ve just been messing up.’ and I said, ‘You’re the man. That’s the answer I wanted to hear.’ He didn't give any excuses. He’s the coolest and I’m proud of the way he came out and played. And I’m not hating on Kyler Murray, because I know there will be a swarm of people that will attack me. But if you ever go to a bar in Houston during an Aggie game, man, that is a Kyler Murray fan club. This quarterback stuff will be interesting.”

“I think everybody in Nashville right now is too busy pounding fireball and listening to Florida-Georgia line to pay attention to football. But, before y’all call Nashville the best SEC town, let me stop you. College Station is the best SEC town. What are we talking about? I’ve heard good things about Baton Rouge though.”

“I was at Wurstfest, so I watched bits and pieces of the last game. But, from what I heard, it wasn't as pretty as it should have been. Vanderbilt has a really good defense and our offense isn't clicking, which scares me. Their strong point is our weak one. I’m always going to say we’re going to win, but I also would have put the house on Auburn. I did not see that one coming. So lately I’ve been feeling a little down, so I won’t get my hopes up too high. We better beat Vanderbilt is what I’m saying. Our defense is killer. Myles Garrett was just announced as a finalist for the Lombardi Award. That dude is an animal. You know, I was actually third in that, but I had to withdraw due to some stuff and just to avoid the publicity, I withdrew my name. My stats clearly showed I deserved to be a finalist.”

“The crazy thing about this is that we don’t look like we are having any fun. When we were 6-6 when I played, we were still having fun. There was no hostility and even the fans were disappointed, but it was more like, ‘why can’t we get over this?’ Now there is just so much bitterness. I wish I was out there so bad. Let’s just go to Nashville for the first time, have a bad butt time and win. Having fun results in winning.”

Pitiful segment. I turned it off after 4 minutes of giggling at Spencer drinking too much whiskey. Drunk former athlete talk is not good radio.
